Thank you to Eric from @liccardo.house.gov’s office for meeting w @cassandrapaul.bsky.social & I to discuss canceled NSF grants at SJSU-including our grant w @proftv.bsky.social & Resa Kelly to improve intro STEM teaching & the LSAMP grant that has supported many undergrad researchers in my lab 🧪

That over budget line is equivalent to 400 5-year biomedical research grants.

Hopeful that SJSU’s U RISE grant will be one of the restored grants. Thanks to the @aclu.org, @agrobbonta.oag.ca.gov and CA for joining the lawsuit, the other plaintiffs, and all the people gathering data on cancelled grants like @scott-delaney.bsky.social

Also, people will die. Children will die. Millions will be disabled. And all of these deaths and disabilities are preventable.

Trump is cutting National Cancer Institute funding by $2.7B in the name of “saving taxpayer dollars.” John Harwood points out that Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires are 18 times that amount. But unlike billionaire tax cuts, federally funded research is a “return on investment for the entire country.

Today I had the honor of speaking in front of nearly 3000 people today at the Woodland #NoKings rally. WE FEAR NO KING BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE ONE ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾 let’s gooooooo

Joined many of my neighbors in San Jose for a completely peaceful march today. Enough people marched to fill the 1 mile route completely at least twice. Saw multiple elected officials and families and thankfully no militarized police presence. #NoKings

Love the 9 yo w the Trump is Sus sign. 10 yo made me put ‘Kings are Cringe’ on our sign and explained cringe meant like sus and all the kids would appreciate it.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. apparently embraces the outdated "miasma theory" of disease instead of the widely accept "germ theory" of disease, which may help explain some of the actions he's been taking.

The CDC has released new measles guidance for summer camps, urging to check for measles immunity in campers and staff, stockpiling face masks It comes as we're now less than a hundred cases from setting a record, marking worst year since 20th century www.cbsnews.com/news/cdc-urg...

The SURE-First (R16) and SURE NOFOs have been published. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

A document circulated to members of Congress misinterprets studies and cites debunked research, scientists say. It could influence congressional perceptions of vaccine safety.

Join the 22,339 people who have joined to support our NIH colleagues. Let's get this to 50,000 RT

🎶 One of these things is not like the other 🎶

1. Do you believe that pathogens cause disease? 2. Why has CDC greatly reduced testing and monitoring for human H5N1 cases? 3. Do you believe that HIV causes AIDS? 4. Do you believe that the polio vaccine is safe & effective and will you commit to not changing recommendations on polio vaccination?

Tear gas can cause long-term health consequences by making people more susceptible to contracting respiratory illnesses, including COVID. The chemical agent can also hurt people inside their homes if it seeps into residential neighborhoods. What you need to know (published 2020):

So-called “less-lethal” weapons like those that have been used against demonstrators in Los Angeles can cause severe, lasting harm like nerve or brain damage or blindness. They can also kill. www.wired.com/story/what-t...

Shocking to see such liberal use of tear gas in LA-something not allowed during war. Tear gas is dangerous, increases the transmission of respiratory illness, & contaminates local homes, schools, and businesses. Just asked my state Asm @asmgailpellerin.bsky.social to ban its use in our communities.

RFK Jr.‘s extreme anti-vax views — and his related conflicts of interest — were a huge problem during his confirmation process. So he promised not to change the vaccine advisory panel. Today, he fired every single expert on that panel. It's a public health disaster.

I urge others to similarly support our patriots at NIH who use their training and talents to improve human health and position the US as the world’s leader in biomedical discovery, innovation and technology development 🙏

“Say it’s 1955 and we’re funding Jonas Salk. We might have just canceled his grant,” says a program director at a small institute at NIH who spoke on condition of anonymity. “That’s hard to sleep with.” Great coverage @laureloldach.bsky.social cen.acs.org/policy/resea... #[email protected]

At least two of my SJSU colleagues have faced slow non-competitive renewals. This often means people can’t pay the scientists in their lab or have to pause ongoing work, which will then cost more to restart-the opposite of efficiency 🧪

“I want people to know how bad things are at NIH,” Norton told The Associated Press. 🎤⬇️ apnews.com/article/nih-...

a reminder that soldiers don’t carry tear gas, because using it against military combatants would be a war crime. but cops using it against civilians is fine for some reason.

#PedSky #MedSky #EpiSky #policysky #polisky #neuroskyence #PainResearch 🛟🧪 It is #teargas time again! The attention span of the American public and politicians is short. There is an outcry every few years when vast quantities of tear gas are used by police forces, only to die down quickly afterwards

Paramount, CA is putting out a call for environmental engineers to collect and preserve air, soil, and water samples from the tear-gassed areas for examination and documentation.

Reminder that tear gas is a chemical weapon that is illegal to deploy in warfare, yet cops are allowed to blanket civilians in clouds of the stuff.

Folks, the way to read the NYT article about OpenAI and higher education is to recognize that the person OpenAI hired to lead their effort came from Coursera. Remember when Coursera and MOOCs were going to cause the reinvention of higher education?

This cool paper about a garbage truck riding Western Gull is by my SJSU colleague Scott Shaffer’s lab. 🧪

Man comes to the US from Lebanon. Starts out delivering pizzas, becomes a Nobel winning neuroscientist. Trump freezes his funding, he gets an email from China offering to move his lab “any city, any university I want" with guaranteed funding for 20 years. What are we doing?

“It is destabilizing, frustrating and enraging to feel like my daughter, who wasn’t even 18 months old, has done more for public health than some people who are now currently in charge of it,” Giglia said.

In the 19thC there was a German chemist named Max von Pettenkofer. He refused to accept that the bacterium Vibrio cholerae (identified in 1884 by his rival Robert Koch) was the sole cause of cholera. So he decided to publicly drink a fresh culture of cholera (from a dead patient) to prove his point🧵

To put these top-line budget numbers in context, cuts of this magnitude would effectively mean no new grants in FY2026. The entire extramural budget would go to existing, continuing grants. An abject failure of American ambition. And a betrayal of our global leadership in health science innovation.

Check out this great assignment to teach students to fact check AI that my SJSU colleagues published in @apsphysiology.bsky.social @apspublications.bsky.social 🧪 journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10....

I urge everyone to read Unbreaking’s new page on everything the govt is doing to destroy & diminish medical research funding. It’s the best thing I’ve read on this topic: @lizneeley.bsky.social & co have such done an incredible job. unbreaking.org/issues/medic...

Today I join the ranks of researchers whose projects were terminated & share their pain. Mine was a K00, a career development award stemming from the DSPAN program that worked to create a diverse neuroscience workforce. I will always be grateful for what this award allowed me to accomplish.
