Huh. First and second sentences of a paper written by a faculty of arts, letters and social sciences. Same construction. Statement of idea and reference to the whole idea with “This is because….”
An inability to hold an idea in your head from one sentence to the next does not inspire confidence.

“Because of this.” by itself is not a complete sentence. But the way you attached it to “we stayed inside” with a comma, makes the whole sentence complete.
