the stanford listing site was pretty good too, just bad for if you have a pet, which i did. it was definitely a part time job for a while to find something, but it's a big relief once it is settled!

belated congratulations!! we had luck with sabbatical homes, also searched on furnishedfinder.com and almost went with one on that but too loud for light sleeping spouse, haha. if it is just you, this looks ok? www.sabbaticalhomes.com/rental/142341

another vote of agreement! always worth a post, and i would bet money your post has better SEO/whatever SEO is nowadays, so you'll also be signal boosting their work with those links.

ooh, i didn't know apple changed things up all the time. i guess every OS is its own style of fun/frustration!

i mean, some stuff just doesn't work (have to use my phone to stream on peacock). i do appreciate _why_ things like that don't work, in a values way. i think for me though, the ease of say, dev environments also makes my life harder cause then i try doing things i'm not really prepared to, haha.

for example, i use linux as my operating system. i'm not even entirely sure why? but it felt like good "practice" and i guess it is, for getting really immersed in forums when random problems crop up.

thank you for this walk through! tomorrow i will try to fix up these styling issues again. got my content migrated. this is maybe really happening. yay. thanks again!

oh, awesome. ok, i do have a question! do you have any hugo CSS how-to recommendations? i'm very not good with CSS and don't understand how all the theme stuff interacts to fix a few small things annoying me in this theme i otherwise really like github.com/amazingrise/...

thank you so much for the offer. it looks like i maaaay have it figured out. i will reach out if i reach another blocker though. THANK YOU!!

if you're in the UK, there is a petition related to this: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/72...

oh my gosh, that is such a relief to hear. i'm so glad it is not just me!! i had hoped to do jekyll but after wrestling with it for a while, it appears there's some incompatibilty with my version of linux so i gave up. ha. i forgot about that part of this saga!

oh, thanks, that does look pretty nice! and the theme is similar to the one i finally landed on! i'm trying to stick it out with my lefty webhost and it seems if i shift my domain to another provider (like i tried github pages) it messes with my email. shrug, i like making things hard, i guess!

this person's doh solved my local path issue. but unable to replicate on my host. wheeee www.reddit.com/r/gohugo/com...

i just want a stupid static site and keep making stupid decisions that make this much harder than it should be. (also this is me after trying ghost, after trying astro. i just want to put stupid markdown files on the internet!!!)

totally agree. also, if he wants to bring the UK into play, corbyn actually received more votes than starmer! (the vote share across the parties is what got labour in now, not raw numbers of voters)

i physically recoiled just reading the headline. why would you want any kind of shaving happening anywhere near your EYELID???

a human rights lawyer, even! it's utterly incomprehensible. (i read something that argued he's been a careerist all along so anything he thinks will help him get or cling to power will be done, no matter what, but even that doesn't have to result in this!)

it appears that the extended wait does not apply to spouses, but people on work visas (though the internet is doing lots of sleuthing today, so people could be interpreting it incorrectly!), so it (maybe? probably?) doesn't apply to me. it's all such a terrible mess.

it seems clear that many, many, many issues with migration could be better addressed with the barest minimum of empathy. and yet, "center left" parties on both sides of the atlantic instead prefer to capitulate to fear mongering BS instead of meeting anyone's actual material and social needs.

so, if something happens to my mom, the only way i can be with and help her is to leave the UK. this is a lot of pressure on your immigration status! (and your heart, even when you have fully chosen this path...)
comment in response to post
also: since a 2012 law, it has been effectively impossible to bring a parent into the UK. even with settled status. even with citizenship. freemovement.org.uk/out-with-the...
comment in response to post
the thing is, all that settled status gets you is more freedom with where you spend your time! it doesn't take care of the money or job issues or anything involved in needing to take care of loved ones elsewhere
comment in response to post
would i risk my visa to be able to spend time helping and taking care of her? and i only have one close family member like that, nevermind people who had to leave behind children and other loved ones to work in the UK
comment in response to post
it is so incredibly challenging straddling life in two countries. i only have my mom to think about, but i am 1 out of 5 years into constant low level worry about if something happens to her (you can only spend a limited amount of time outside of the country and maintain your visa)
comment in response to post
i'm so angry about these proposed immigration changes in the UK. one of which is particularly cruel: doubling the time people can apply for settled status from 5 to 10yrs www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

such incredibly exciting news, congratulations!

if you figure it out, please let me know!! i couldn't find the setting. it does look like you can read and do comprehension questions but does not look as satisfying racking up the completed lessons.

very curious how it goes for you. i looked into this a bit after your initial post, but mango seems to require speaking and my pronunciation is atrocious (also made me fail with rosetta stone wayyyyyy back in the day). if there are any more text based options, would be great!

Like if you are looking for a way to make a difference in the hellscape and you're already donating to mutual aid, stocking your free fridge, curating your lil free library, speaking up at your city council and school board and library board meetings, the next thing to do is fund indie journalists

you know i do!
