When the Spruce Tree Center in St Paul was built in 1988, its controversial design inspired a new generation of architects across the Americas. Here, in Montreal, an architect responds to BRW's iconic design with an inversion of the pyramid shape, a comment on its impact on the built form of the era

There is national news here and they are all shouting over each other. Locally, we usually quietly wait for each other.

I went through all the protest bills in Congress this session. Most are brought by GOP & increase penalties for protest - save one named for a Jan 6 rioter that bars detention for political protesters. Only 2 Democratic bills protect protesters - both from Ilhan Omar theintercept.com/2025/06/11/p...

Much in the same way we should view bombers, aircraft carriers, and foreign bases as a theft of local parks, schools, and other civic institutions, we should view multimulti-million dollar freeway interchanges and parking garages as the exact same civic theft.

STUDY found that “the growing number of SUVs reduced the vehicle capacity of freeway lanes in Minnesota’s Twin Cities by 9.5% between 1995-2019. Their findings suggest yet another way in which ‘car bloat’ exacerbates problems that affect everyone, regardless of how they travel.” Plus more deaths…

"Minneapolis is a giant park with some houses sprinkled throughout" Line from the LoTI Pencil sharpening yesterday that I've somehow never heard, but adore. How lucky are we that we get to live here?!

Someday I'll find time to write the inevitable @streets.mn article about how standard format golf, much like surface parking lots, are the antithesis of people centered city design. Until then, know that Mayo Clinic researchers found a strong link between proximity to golf courses and Parkinson's.

Please join us for the first ever Twin Cities Pride Ride on June 28th. We'll be heading from Queermunity to The People's Pride on an inclusive route at a casual and welcoming pace. More info at bit.ly/tcprideride

If this is going to keep happening, could Canada maybe plant some mesquite or cherry. This coniferous air tastes terrible.

Politicians are elected by their voter base to represent the whole population (to the best of their ability). Frey not recognizing that does not speak well of his emotional maturity or ability to unite and lead.

Biking on the Midtown Greenway, I passed a group of 3 bike riders stopped to conversate in ASL. Whereas they might not feel comfortable riding on many streets, the safety from cars afforded by this dedicated infrastructure meant they could be out and active. Bike infrastructure is accessibility.

Update: he showed up after everything was done. The room voted to adjourn.

Frey didn't even show up or send someone to speak on his behalf. Not a good look in the most diverse ward in the city. #ward9

Seems like politics 101 would tell you to get baked goods and coffee from a locally relevant business..... #ward9

We don't need more lane miles, we need more efficient transportation. These cars were at a full stop. Each contain only one person. This road is signed slow enough that bikes travel the same speed. 3 bus routes run past here. Lrt stop is 0.2 miles away. We don't need to give cars this much space.

Hot take: Most of the aesthetic criticism of 5 over 1s could be mitigated with ground level building ornamentation, small retail spaces, and sufficient sidewalk adjacent foliage. Most major global cities are primarily made of boring concrete buildings, it just isn't evident at ground level.

Always great getting to join the @streets.mn pod convo!

Help us keep this pilot project rolling!

Cities say they're doing just fine, but we've already tried local control and now we're 100k homes short. Read more about what #YesToHomes and our #MNleg champions Rep. Mike Howard & @lindseyportmn.bsky.social want to build more homes in today's Star Tribune. www.startribune.com/readers-writ...

"Crashes are not accidents. Our communities and roadways can be designed to all but eliminate traffic fatalities. It takes some political courage and enough humility for leaders to admit if they don't know why something like a 4to3 conversion is the best option. Winona needed that in 2021."

Centralized Transportation Demand Management (TDM) that only focuses on work commutes is the same mindset as centralized business districts just in a different format - something best left in a euclidean zoned past. 1/3

You know that alley with the adorable small businesses? A coffee shop, bakery, etc. Maybe you even have one in your community. That is a reaction against car-oriented streets. That is a natural human desire for coziness. It was an intentional choice. Lean into it.

Worth reading the whole thing. The work that has been done to make the metro core safe for people on bikes needs to happen statewide. Half the population does not live in the metro and they deserve safe transportation options too. Wins won in greater MN make wins easier in the metro.

Two of the biggest land use experiments of the 20th century: Shopping Malls & Downtown Business Districts, have shown themselves to be abject failures. Suburban Sprawl remains a financial ticking timebomb waiting to go off. Are there examples of 20th century land use that wasn't a huge mistake? 🤔

If you care about equity or accessibility, and you live in Minnesota, you should support @bikemn.bsky.social

The port of Seattle right now. It's completely empty with no new ships coming in. We're going to have disruptions to access of basic goods unlike anything we have ever experienced in our lifetimes.

If Indie Bookshop Day showed me anything it was that the death of Uptown is just a failure of imagination for those unable or unwilling to see a live-able future. Market correctly to the people who live here and near here. The city doesn't need the burbs but the burbs DO need the city.
