And the reason that Farage is still a threat in UK politics is that neither our politicians nor our media have made this clear. Brexit was catastrophically stupid and self-destructive. That should have *ended* Farage’s career.

After X’s repressive actions, hundreds of thousands in Turkey joined Bluesky, seeking a freer space. Reports of government censorship here are deeply troubling. Don’t squander this trust. This is a critical moment for principled leadership—not silent compromise. @jay.bsky.team

Such a great analogy. Exactly this!

This is one of the many reasons why 19th Century free traders like Winston Churchill hated tariffs. It all decays into deeply corrupt, hidden, capricious deal making between the executive & powerful interests.

A fascinating and thought provoking exploration of why we're particularly bad at getting things done

The war is much closer to Europe than it may seem. How to stop it? #MakeRussiaPay: confiscate $300 billion in frozen russian assets and use the money to strengthen Ukraine’s army and Europe’s defence. Europe has the resources - what’s missing is courage.

Fucking hilarious

Could I please ask the press to stop reporting Trump’s rather arbitrary numbers of the tariffs other countries impose as though this were real? The WTO has a tariff database. You can look up the real numbers there.

A good analysis of the creeping powers of the executive in the US

You use the officials USGovt secure channels to hide communications from bad actors. You use Signal to hide communications from the USGovt.

I honestly cannot express how awesome it is that the DoD was putting out these statements at the literal exact same time that the Secretary of Defense was negligently transmitting classified information on an unsecure platform to a journalist. It's just utterly amazing. What a time to be alive.

Reminder: after around 900k total casualties, #Russia currently occupies 19% of #Ukraine. It occupied 30% three years ago, when it had less than 100k total casualties. Let’s stop pretending that Russia is in a position of strength. It’s only #Trump that tries to put it in one.

No discussion yet of the cause of the Heathrow fire. Russian sabotage surely the most likely

Always remember that Britain chose to make things this hard. It ejected itself from the EU, left the Single Market, bodged up a rubbish trade deal, cancelled HS2 and told paying students they weren't wanted. The country has chosen the steepest, rockiest, most difficult path. 🇬🇧

www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cg... Highly suspect they'll conclude this was an accident. 100% certain it wasn't....(Russian captain, US jet fuel, see ships dragging anchors into cables ...)

Becky Burke of Book Island (a picture book publisher in the UK founded by my fellow Tokarczuk translator Greet Pauwelijn) was "detained" by ICE at the Canadian border on 2/28. Her father asked that her story be shared in case someone can help her. He writes:

With Lowe’s whip withdrawn, the proportion of Reform MPs jailed for viciously assaulting a woman now stands at 25%.

What a complete dickhead Andrew Neil has proven to be from a moderately well respected position 5 years ago

Love this. Hope this moniker catches on. Please repost and share

US is already treaty-bound to supply security guarantees for Ukraine (Budapest), so is to all intents and purposes in breach of that treaty by witholding further commitments. And since US has breached one treaty, why should UKR trust US to honour another when US would already have what it wants?

This is so timid. Instead the Europeans should make the mineral deal and provide what security they can

The mistake is to think Zelensky could have salvaged this. Trump admin just doesn’t want to support Ukraine. Period. There was also never going to be a peace agreement. That’s been clear but everyone has been pretending otherwise. There can be no confusion now.

He is not just appeasing Putin, he is aligned with him. And every single client journalist, political shill & public/online cheerleader on both sides of the Atlantic is too. Against Zelensky. Against Ukraine. Against freedom. Against the most basic tenets of decency.

Just sent $100. Hope enough people do to make a difference

Could not agree more. The Prez & VP are shameful, embarrassing Putin puppets & a disgrace to our country. 🤮 #SlavaUkraine 🇺🇦

Every news channel has been saying all day the Tate brothers' history is one of misogyny, their return is shady, and the effect on victims traumatic. AND YET... all of them are standing by to livecast any remark the Tates care to make after landing, live and in full. You are part of the problem.

100% accurate. Do enough of the population know this well enough to guide the (largely) self serving idiots in charge?

George Orwell had a few choice words about pacifism when the world was last this threatened by fascists. "Pacifism is objectively pro-Fascist. This is elementary common sense. If you hamper the war effort of one side you automatically help that of the other."

No, but if you’re looking for one, I am aware of a guy you work with that was indicted four times and convicted of thirty-four felonies.

This is pretty straightforward authoritarianism: if you don't support my toxic businesses, I will use my government power to kneecap yours.

So true So obvious (now) Hats of to Carole

March 2022 Marco Rubio might have been surprised to learn that a leading figure helping Russia try to achieve its war aims is February 2025 Marco Rubio.

An outstanding analysis.. Most people aren't going to want to believe this, in part because of the uncomfortable conclusions it leads to

what's particularly bonkers is the sheer expense, political effort, complicated negotiations and pain for exporters - for a result which the public have now largely disowned
