The FBI is disbanding a squad that handles investigations into members of Congress and fraud by federal employees, according to people familiar with the matter, a move that comes as the Trump administration seeks to eliminate or marginalize units responsible for public corruption cases.

For a half century now, Republicans a) pretend to care about deficits when Dems are in power, as a pretext to cut spending, & b) massively grow deficits when they are in power, via tax cuts for the rich. The mainstream political press has not just allowed this deception, they've actively colluded.

I agree with Speaker Johnson. No one should wonder whether a lawmaker is advancing their own financial interest or the public interest. It makes no sense for lawmakers to own individual stocks. Just ban it. Members of Congress shouldn't even have the appearance of conflicts.

Nobody besides antivaxx weirdos thinks “mRNA is a bad platform.” There is no data that would lead anyone to think that and no evidence to justify saying “mRNA is a bad platform.” This guy is not a scientist. FWIW there is already an mRNA vaccine that can cure pancreatic cancer; he thinks that’s bad

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com Three Yale professors who have written extensively on authoritarianism are leaving the U.S. “We’re like people on the Titanic saying our ship can’t sink,” Marci Shore said. “And what you know as a historian is that there is no such thing as a ship that can’t sink.”

Today "a milestone in the evolution of personalized therapies for rare & ultra-rare inborn errors of metabolism" —the 1st human to undergo custom genome editing —from decades of NIH funded research www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.... @nejm.org www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.... www.nytimes.com/2025/05/15/h...

We have an NIH director who believes that universities should be illegally defunded because of the free speech of their students and staff. This is utterly disqualifying and he should be replaced as soon as possible.

Despicable.

Thanks for sharing this and I am sorry for you and your team. INAL but I really don't under where "NIH" thinks they have the authority to do this.

📢📢 At least *13.7 million people* would lose health coverage and become uninsured under the House Republican agenda #Medicaid and #ACA marketplace agenda. Policymakers should protect people’s health care, not cut it.

Just tax the hell out of them.

Urging researchers who are scrambling for funding and thinking that private money is The Answer to read widely and think deeply about what exactly “science-first philanthropy” is doing.

One of my favorite history of science books: "Brave Genius" It's about Jacques Monod, discoverer of the lac operon, who risked everything to fight fascism/Nazis as a part of the French Resistance, along with his buddy Albert Camus. Be like Jacques. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/213596...

This is a great post about the magic mixture that made Bell labs work. I especially like this bit because it accords very strongly with something I've always believed. "Why would you expect information theory from someone who needs a babysitter?"

guess we'll be taking a trip to canada this fall to get boosted

Again I will mention when I worked for the USDA I couldn't accept coffee and muffins from a client because it might be over $10.

NIH’s Vaccine Research Center once had a 400-person workforce developing and clinically testing vaccines and antibody treatments for dangerous infectious diseases.. Now, after a steady firing of key contractors by the Trump administration, the VRC is reeling.. 🧪🦠 www.science.org/content/arti...

Is it too soon to begin discussing all the members of the Trump regime who should be held criminally liable once the Republicans have been removed from power?

I once asked a scientist whom I respect enormously her advice for a successful career and life in science. Her advice: Leave every place better than you found it. It surprises me that many people would try hard to do the compete opposite … and we would elect them to run the country.

Nazis. Pure evil.

looking forward to one day having a democratic president so this vaccine will be made available to americans

Once again, this is illegal.

OMFG. If there's any agency that is NOT top-heavy, it's NSF. Over 95% of the money flowing through NSF goes to awards.

The National Science Foundation marks its 75th anniversary this week. Rather than celebrate, it's time to save it. www.savensf.com/nsf-at-75-to...

A warning for our times: “Authoritarianism is harder to recognize than it used to be,” but “When citizens must think twice about criticizing or opposing the government because they could credibly face government retribution, they no longer live in a full democracy.” www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/o...

This is an absolute disaster. If we don't stop this, they will turn NSF into a pawn of the Trump administration. There will be no research on climate, biodiversity, or anything that isn't eugenics or AI or how to more efficiently destroy the planet for profit. This cannot be allowed to happen.

Love this example. In 1981 John Hopfield received this small $283K NSF grant to study an obscure topic -- artificial neural networks: www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/... The results of this NSF grant are the basis of a multibillion-dollar AI revolution, for which Dr. Hopfield won a Nobel prize last year

This study in The Lancet found that cuts to US spending on PEPFAR, the program to deliver H.I.V. and AIDS relief abroad, could cost the lives of 500,000 children by 2030. Half a million kids. Kids. www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-04...

About Musk: "Well, he’s the one who cut the U.S.A.I.D. budget. He put it in the wood chipper, because he didn’t go to a party that weekend. ... In the meantime, the world’s richest man has been involved in the deaths of the world’s poorest children." www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/m...

RFK Jr. Marty Makary Jay Bhattacharya Dr. Oz And now a random youtuber??? Clown ass country.

This is absolutely outrageous and has already been confirmed by a federal judge to violate a previous order that he issued. Sitting back and saying "phew, we stopped that" isn't nearly enough. We need an immediate and aggressive investigation into the what the hell is going on and on whose orders.

This is worth reaing & internalizing. Trump projects confidence & inevitability. But, as @lizdye.bsky.social writes: "After weeks of public fulminating, the administration quietly folded and quit trying to steal kids’ lunch money for the grievous sin of letting a couple of trans girls play sports."

Please, #microbiome and #sequencing data are NOT zero-inflated. Let's stop repeating this nonsense. Zero-inflated compared to what?? Those zeroes carry important information about abundance and sequencing depth, and are not "inflated" in any sense. 1/6
