If by middle road you mean automation of processes that involve decisions, that is just decision automation - so I don't really see that much of a middle ground between the two, outside of the answer to "Is it making decisions on my behalf?" being more nuanced than yes or no.

A generative automation is decision automation, because creation is made of a multitude of decisions. I decided to exemplify, to make the example this very reply, to use the Oxford comma, and to use etc. etc.

My 2c on it: We really ought to popularize the distinction between tools automating processes and tools automating decisions. The moral differencs between a tool that extends one frame's coloring to the rest of an animation and one generating drawings from scratch would be much simpler to articulate
