Well, I think the context is a little different when compared to the current mediascape. You can watch and play things from 30 years ago way more easily today than in 2001. You'll even be more aware of things from 30 years ago with several youtube channels telling you about those things.

A fun example is the original Dungeons & Dragons. While it pioneered RPGs (let's not get into this), it doesn't call itself an RPG or Role-Playing Game.
"Role-Playing Game" was popularized years later by competitors so they could advertise their games without saying "like D&D" and getting sued.
