Trump says he's putting a 50% tariff on Europe in a week. The stock market had recovered too much from the last time Trump tanked it. It gave Trump the opportunity to fulfill his narcissistic needs again by blowing stuff up. Republicans in Congress keep allowing and emboldening this insanity.

@paulnowaktuc.bsky.social @unitesharon.bsky.social All that money, members allowed to be paid into the Labour Party & direct to individual MPs... Do you ever think they stole it, while serving the interests of richer men? We helped pay for Labour policies, not more hate & poverty. Help us!

Starmer and Lammy are shameless

Who is actually in power? Keir Starmer or the unelected Morgan McSweeney?

Yet another AI-generated image falsely claiming to show the aftermath of a strike by the Houthis on Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport is making the rounds. This image is fake.

Understanding the sentence of Lucy Connolly Had it not been for competent legal advice, her sentence could have been far harsher By me, at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

The value of Simon Jenkins is that whatever topic he picks he is 100% certain to be wrong on. Whether this is a service a newspaper should pay for is, however, questionable.

"Every baby in Gaza is an enemy" "Every child in Gaza is an enemy" "We need to occupy Gaza and settle it so that not a single Gazan child remains there" - Israeli politician Moshe Feiglin

I’m just checking for Chris Mason’s many pieces about it being unfair for the Tories to blame the last Labour government from 2011-2024 but all I can find is him blowing their ego about how great that was www.bbc.com/news/article...

Many falsehoods here from this Brexit advocate: the e gates are not only for business travellers; Erasmus is not just for "top graduates"; and the last election was won by...a party that promised a reset in relations with the EU.

If they did it to any other UK university, however, the media elite wouldn’t even notice.

That's not the British way. They prefer to starve them of funds while capping fees. It's much more genteel

Darshna Soni, "Look what happened after Brexit" "This line shows the new points based system introduced under Boris Johnson, and net migration soared to more than 900,000" #C4News casually calling out Boris Johnson's Brexit lie that he would bring migration down

International Criminal Court prosecutors have urged judges to reject a request by Israel to scrap arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister while the court reconsiders its jurisdiction over Gaza and the West Bank.

Two thoughts on this 1. Harvard is being targetted because it resisted. Which also shows, conversely, that resisting is effective - so long as critical mass resist 2. This is both chaotic and a defined part of an authoritarian playbook. Project 2025 was, and is, real. Always was

Universities are always one of the first targets for fascist regimes, so - alarming and depressing as it may be - this escalation against Harvard, which has very publicly stood up to the regime, should come as no surprise.

Slovenia's President, Nataša Pirc Musar, "We are witnessing a genocide" "We are witnessing it, watching it, and we remain quiet" *very long clap followed by a standing ovation* "The inhumane treatment of civilians is something the international community should not look away from"

Totally making up nonsense, completely ahistorical reasons to exclude the Fed. Wizards in Robes doing authoritarian alchemy. Other, more serious countries have actual constitutional courts, so they get to live under the rule of law & be actual democracies.

If only there were someone in a senior position of power in this relationship

Where's the NYT think piece on the President's cognitive decline?

This bespoke exception for the Fed is one of the most brazenly made-up things I've ever seen the Supreme Court do (which is saying something). There is no principled basis to distinguish the Fed from other independent agencies. The conservative justices just don't want Trump to crash the market!

Policymakers at the Home Office continue to ignore research produced by... er, the Home Office.

The Supreme Court is allowing President Donald Trump to fire two Biden-appointed members of U.S. labor boards even though federal law bars the president from dismissing the officials for political reasons.

Discworld QOTD, from The Truth

BREAKING: The Supreme Court’s conservatives allow Trump’s firing of members of multi-member boards to remain in effect during litigation, effectively overruling a 90-year-old precedent. The liberal justices, in an opinion by Kagan, dissents. More to come: www.lawdork.com

Man in yellow, "Is it good for fisherman? No" "But I think the Tory on the panel is using the fishing industry to exaggerate it's point" "Fishing contributes less than 0.5% GDP to this country" "Stop being disingenuous" #BBCQT

Zanny Minton Beddoes, "The UK-EU reset is a sensible deal that modestly reduces some of the worst frictions of Brexit" "It doesn't change anything very dramatically" #BBCQT "If I was a Brexiter I would be pretty happy with this because this is entrenching a relatively hard Brexit"

Tell me: if these dudes show up with guns in an unmarked van to grab someone, why don’t the Second Amendment fans think they should be shot?

For the past 30 years, DOJ has enforced the statute passed by Congress that prohibits unconstitutional police practices. Trump Administration has announced it will no longer fulfill this duty. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/21/u...

U.S. Medicaid slashed & burned. $535bn cuts to be ripped from Medicare. Not even mentioned in the bill. Now look at what Kendall, Reeves & Streeting are doing! They announce 'protections' but actually restrict, remove, & directly deliver cuts in assistance to rents, living costs, H&SC. Starmerism
