Having the supply exported would be even worse due to increased transportation costs. If there’s always going to be someone somewhere willing/able to buy I don’t know how to really reduce economic demand.

Consuming less of something will reduce the economic demand and typically result in less of it being produced as time goes on. Just because you won’t see immediate results doesn’t mean that something isn’t worth doing.

I’d like to point out that Trump actively invites specifically the white people from South Africa to come to the US for refuge while deporting all the brown refugees.

I can’t really speak for Australia though, I don’t know what your country’s relationship with Israel has been.

The west (mainly USA) is complicit in Gaza by giving them a bunch of weapons and money to buy weapons. We want our government to stop actively supporting genocidal regimes.

That’s understandable then, if you’re in a crisis you have to get yourself sorted out before you can worry about others.

Why is it so important that the money stays in your own country? Are people from other countries worth less? The only logic I see here is that it helps your own group of people instead of helping other people.

The amount of plastic we use for packaging is a bigger problem, but switching to reusable bags is an easy way to lessen our environmental impact. Plastic is cheap and waterproof which makes it ideal packaging for many items, so it’s hard to come up with a good replacement.

Trade deficit means we buy more of other people’s stuff than they buy from us.

I thought he already stepped down to focus on salvaging Tesla.

If one side views the other as supporting horrible things like baby murder or sending political prisoners to death camps, why wouldn’t they hate them? Surely any decent person would be against doing horrible things to other people? It’s not good to demonize others, but I get where it comes from.

The immigration policy is clearly about race, Trump kicked out all the refugees from places like Afghanistan but actively invites specifically the white people from South Africa to come as refugees.

They used to have something like that in southern states (Jim Crow literacy tests).

I was trying to suggest that some people may see it as a win, and I may have made myself look stupid talking about something I don’t know anything about, but I’m sure plenty of other people are as ignorant as I was.

Numerous shows I’ve watched have made references to diversity hires/quoatas, so when I see this stuff about DEI in hiring practices, I assume that’s where “diversity hires” come from. I already said I didn’t know much but I wanted to give another view as BlueSky is a bit of an echo chamber

2 - I don’t know much about DEI programs but they in general seem to benefit minorities over white men, which can easily be seen as straight up discrimination. Also, using any metric other than merit for job allocation inherently results in less capable people getting hired. Trump ended much DEI.

1 - Not a republican but there’s a lot of fearmongering where places like Fox News bring attention to every single instance of an illegal immigrant committing a violent crime, so (ignoring the destructing of due process) mass deportations probably appeal to a lot of people
