Preventing total war means preparing for one.
We need to be prepared to scale up production now. But we also need to be prepared to reorient the economy to warfare, if needed.
This is how we deter Putin. This is how we keep the peace.

Finally, we need the financing to achieve this.
We need a Multilateral Defence Bank, to finance this shift in production today.

What we produce is equally important.
Expendable drones costing just $1000 can destroy exquisite tanks worth $9m. And drones can be produced in months, yet tanks take years just to upgrade.
In the pre-war period, we need to decide now which exquisite systems to produce.

Deterrence requires a shift in mindset and production.
A shift in mindset requires us to recognise we are in a pre-war situation, and that we need to prepare for total war.
A shift in production so we can outproduce Russia in drones, guns, and shells.

2) Get housing costs down by building more affordable homes. We can also make it easier for young people to get mortgages where these payments are less than the rent they pay
3) Create good jobs for non-graduates with a focus on post-industrial areas.

Both sets of voters want radical change because they can't see the current system working for them.
Getting them back is all about making life affordable for them again.
Here's how we do that:
1) Get energy costs down through clean energy and home insulation

Young (graduate) renters can't get on the housing ladder without Mum and Dad.
Rents are rising rapidly (8%) and mortgages are out of reach.
They are going Green. And they can cost us seats even where the Greens aren't in contention.

The non-graduates who are going to Reform can't afford a decent living because there aren't enough good jobs for them.
Deindustrialisation destroyed good non-graduate jobs. Working hard doesn't work for them.
A lot of these voters live in the Red Wall.

Voters that can't afford a decent life are about 50% more likely to have left us, as @profjanegreen.bsky.social has shown
Non-graduates are going to Reform and young (graduate) renters are going Green
Different groups, same problem: the cost of living

On top of this, we need to tell a convincing story about what this means.
For that, you will need to read the piece.

Strength is found in our prosperity, connection, and shared purpose.
Where each of us can earn enough to live a good life - a more prosperous nation.
Where we are connected to each other in our communities.
Where we share a common vision of our values and goals.

We can only make these times a success *if* we apply our timeless values to this moment.
We need strength.
Strength to overcome these existential challenges.
Strength to give the public confidence our nation *can* meet this moment.

These are the most dangerous times we've ever faced. We face three existential crises
- Living standards: People can’t afford to live and so are rejecting democracy
- War: Putin is threatening Europe with invasion
- Climate: The planet is burning

In politics we should *start* with our timeless values. For us in Labour: for everyone to be able to live a good life.
While our values are timeless, how they apply in different times changes.
These times are clearly very different.
