Pre-Google SUCKED. The OG search engines like Yahoo & AltaVista were sad jokes. Google became the default bc it's by far the best. Ditto Gmail vs. Hotmail, Outlook or anything Microsoft. Waymo's the likely Google here. Tesla's the AltaVista, at least w/Elon, but even w/o him it's woefully inferior.

Which search engine do you use? That's a rhetorical question: you most likely use Google (like all). Even if you use Safari on iPhone or Mac, Google's the default search engine. Why? Easy: they built a better mousetrap, and invented the first way to search the internet and *find* what you want.

It did not, and any assumptions that the marketplace will accept anything *but* Waymos – considering how much further advanced they are than Tesla's AVs (which still haven't been tested on a public road sans safety driver) – are inherently flawed. If you think that's an exaggeration, read this bit.

Yes, I know Audra's not in every episode, and isn't a main character. Nicole Kidman's not in every ep of "Lioness," but this less talented white lady is always in the opening credits. In other words: let her have it FFS! (And us.) She is a treasure already robbed once this year for "Gypsy."

Biggest "OOPSIE!" of all time. 🤬🤬🤬

Also: "For Sunday’s robotaxi trial, the company sent invitations to a group of online Tesla influencers and others for an event the company said would include 10 or 20 Model Y vehicles operating in a limited area." An all-Tesla-fanboy testing pool? Yes, I'm sure their feedback will be valid. 🙄

EXTREMELY good timing in hindsight.

I’m assuming it’s bizarroworld Pavlovian in some respect.

I’m truly curious if some - okay, most - think it’s all a hoax.

Agreed, plus Trump seems to have no clue Bibi played him.

Yeah, but they’re big meanies so it’s okay. 🙄

Figured the entire PNW would show up in droves. Didn’t realize EVERYWHERE would have droves! (But obvs props to Seattle.) Guess we’re just THAT fucking sick of this “king” tyrant-wannabe.

A teen getting an onscreen abortion was certainly “dark” in contrast to John Hughes fare. Also, in hindsight, Phoebe Cates was severely oversexualized for her age.

Given the vast quantities of filler & Botox throughout her face, accusing others of "putting on a show" is quite rich indeed.

This shit is just sick, and as repulsive as the L.A. raids at Home Depot and the Fashion District. OTOH the more ICE exposes itself, the easier it is to keep tabs on them. Seriously: stick a fucking AirTag through the cracks of a seat in their SUV. EVERY SUV. (Or go even more covert if needed.)

...at least w/o C4. Contrary to cinematic trope, you can't just shoot at the gas tank, nor can you easily use a modern car's tank for such purposes. You can probably already guess that EV fires are far worse, given the difficulty in putting them out, but I'm hoping the Waymo stuff was an anomaly.

I'm surprised I know at least part of the answer, but "exploding car bombs" are up there with hit men as "common tropes in film that almost never happen IRL," or at least not nowadays. (They were used back when the Mafia was still predominant in many areas.) It's surprisingly hard to blow one up.

Yes, the one thing the WH needed was more concrete patio space, and removing that damn leftist-commie Jackie Kennedy’s iconic Rose Garden. 🙄

So, basically the Black Thursday 1929 treatment? Makes sense.

I truly wish the media would drive this issue home more succinctly. This is D.C. 2020 all over again: Trump getting a boner over using troops for DOMINATION of his perceived enemies. The Marines can quite literally do nothing w/o violating the law. This is 100% for show (to state the obvious).

I'm sure you remember Uber's dumpster-fire disaster in Arizona after their AV test mule hit & killed a pedestrian the vehicle should've easily detected, all while its test driver watched "The Voice" on their phone. Finally, it's Austin. Wouldn't surprise me at all if both cars get quickly torched.

Also: I love your work! (And your username. RIP, Ken Block.) This is entirely an aside, but I'm an old-school car nerd & have subscribed to C&D & R&T since HS, and I know I've seen your name a lot over the years. Obviously Tesla's secretive, but I've heard ZERO other reports of real-world testing.
comment in response to post
Agreed on all counts. Elon Musk's recklessness is blindingly obvious at this point, he doesn't seem to grasp just how severe of a hit Tesla would take as a company – and it's taken a ton already – if one of its AVs plows into a Dirty Sixth crowd or something. And I thought *Uber* was off the rails.

Trump explicitly opting not to help our folks most in need? Is it possible for my shock level to be below zero?
comment in response to post
I have complete faith in Waymo – I was one of their beta testers here – but Tesla's already had 50+ fatalities from FSD alone. I also still remember what happened when AZ let Uber test prematurely on public roads: a test mule killed a pedestrian it def should've seen. Tesla's definitely no Waymo.

I live in Austin, and as it so happens, I cover rideshares as well as autonomous vehicles as an analyst. I'm completely HORRIFIED that Tesla's not only being allowed to operate with *zero* known real-world experience, but also doing so on always-crowded-with-pedestrians S. Congress.

Really, WaPo? It took 4-5 days to come up with that? Violent crime's been falling for 33 years, aside from a minor spike during the pandemic. Gollum-Goebbels Miller is spewing 100% propaganda, in part bc your asshole publisher decided to fellate Trump so he wouldn't say mean things about Amazon.
comment in response to post
But of course. Trump can't process that anyone would ever disagree with him, so the only explanation for those who do is them either being "leftist commie Marxists" or being paid plants. All part of his failing magic trick to make everyone forget his shitshow of a presidency.

The president has the authority to deploy the Guard in D.C. as well as states, but whether he can do so if they *decline* the offer is likely a question of first impression. I assume Pelosi called in the Guard bc Trump was having too much fucking fun that day to do so himself.
comment in response to post
Military as in the Guard or the Marines? Definite difference here, to put it mildly.
comment in response to post
The macro point, as always: the majority of the American public pays little attention to the news, but will likely be alarmed to hear that Trump called in the literal fucking Marines entirely for show. I know Trump has retconned the 2020 election in his head, but in reality he got his ass beat.

Conservatives now see little but massively distorted version of reality, and think LA is a "war zone" much like they thought Milwaukee & Portland were in 2020. (But similar story: unrest limited to a tiny area.) It is, however, stressful to see AI, bottled socials, etc. being yet again abused.

I still remember some local Idaho group passing a "resolution" against marriage equality earlier this year. It's as meaningless as this Baptist stance. Once again, with feeling: we need to focus on concrete threats. This isn't one, nor will it *be* one short of SCOTUS granting cert to someone.

Note the judge in the case: Justice Breyer’s little brother, and a Clinton appointee to CA’s Western District. Thinking Trump might kinda sorta face choppy AF waters.

The judge in the case is Justice Breyer's little brother and a Clinton appointee. I suspect it may not go well for Trump.

Of all of Austin's many, many dark secrets, the darkest of all may be the tale of how an evil freeway transmogrified into a corporeal being for purposes of eating pizza. To be fair, we clearly have the Hellmouth directly underneath the Capitol, but still.
