I did have to get special permission from the dean to assume the Axiom of Choice in my algebra class so I could prove the existence of maximal ideals. Very heated discussion but ultimately got the OK. /s

To get an element of order 7, choose a cubic irreducible polynomial over
Z/2 and let M be a matrix for the rational normal form of that polynomial. This element generates a copy of the mult go of the field with 8 elements in GL3(Z/2) and thus has order 7.

This counts the number of bases
for Z/2^3 as a Z/2 vector space. Every group automorphism is automatically linear over Z/2 so you can count group automorphisms by associating sigma to what sigma does to the standard basis.

I rather miraculously got 30 once, but got 10 my other tries. Somehow managed to get by as a mathematician anyway.

I’m a pretty big Harry Belafonte fan too. My 3 year old grandson knows all the words to Jamaica Farewell.
