This is like playing Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Getting Back Together" at a wedding.

💯

oh no. Oh no no no no. this is a song about draft dodging

💯

Millions of protesters across the U.S. took to the streets in demonstrations against the Trump administration today, in stark counter-programming to the president's Washington, D.C., military parade planned to start this evening.

The fact that they have to put Trump in his kiddie fake high school uniform to look anything like patriotism when he dodged the draft is just…. Epic

I wrote quite a lot about how the left’s hateful rhetoric fueled the killings of the healthcare CEO and Israeli embassy staffers. I’m going to either ignore this weekend’s assassinations in Minnesota or maybe write something both siding them.

I wonder what percentage of our fellow Americans hard-support* the assassination. 10%? 15%? (Hard-support vs. soft-support, e.g. “well Democrats have to understand how they have raised anxieties by attacking values” etc. I’d say another 20% soft-support, at least).

Don’t post a picture of anyone’s face at a protest today. Keep your phone off if you can. Keep a buddy system going with one person there. Have at least two people who aren’t with you who know to ask where you are if they don’t hear from you after a certain amount of time.

From a friend who lives on the other side of the world, who I have known since we were girls. This reduced me to tears.

Some thoughts about the military parade in my hometown of Washington DC today -- specifically, the route. Military parades in DC are quite rare. But when they happen, they have always begun, symbolically and geographically, at the Capitol and moved outward. 1/

There's something happening here But what it is ain't exactly clear There's a man with a gun over there Telling me I got to beware I think it's time we stop Children, what's that sound? Everybody look, what's going down?

oh lord

President Donald Trump called Fed Chair Jerome Powell a “numbskull” as he demanded an interest rate cut. “We can’t get this guy to do it,” he said. Trump said he “may have to force something” if inflation is trending down and Powell does not lower interest rates. Read more: cnb.cx/45nypRS

"I cannot say this strongly enough: until 2026, only two things stand between the authoritarian project and its objectives: the judiciary and a popular protest movement. We have no control over the former. We must not surrender, or abandon, the latter."

You're right Pete. Congress has determined it, and they've determined that the military can't be used for domestic law enforcement. The judges are just applying that law.

NEW: US SecDef Pete Hegseth stated on June 10 that the US intends to reduce its budget for the purchase of weapons for Ukraine in 2026. Reducing US military aid to Ukraine will neither lead to a sustainable peace in Ukraine nor compel Putin to reassess his theory of victory. isw.pub/UkrWar061125

Disturbing as hell. But not surprising.

The U.S. is cutting military aid to Ukraine, leaving innocent Ukrainians to die as Russia launches indiscriminate attacks on civilian populations. Hear from Evgeny of Odesa about the daily horrors of Russia's war. Ken Harbaugh and VALOR report from Ukraine:

“With his army” And this isn’t just some slip up. Dude actually emphasizes the word “his”.

look who learned what 86 means

Just because someone is spinning you doesn’t mean you have to get spun.

Sources said that even at the start of his second term, Trump was discussing with multiple advisers where & when it would make sense to send in federal troops, either for supposed crime control or in response to larger-scale public activism against his agenda. 🔗 www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

Can you imagine a single American President before Trump saying this? I can't. Not even the worst of them.

The entire country should be shocked by such blatant corruption. Regardless of left or right.

I'd add that military veterans, in particular, need to talk about why this is a problem and how soldiers need to behave under these circumstances.

There's a lot to unpack here. But the "why do people in the developed world die from chronic diseases at higher rates than in poorer countries" is because we survive long enough to die from chronic rather than infectious disease. This is epidemiology 101. It's not a mystery.

In case you're wondering, authoritarians use this strategy of escalation to manufacture crisis, provoke outrage, then use the reaction to justify repression. It’s not about restoring order, it's about creating a spectacle of chaos they can claim only they can control.

Do we have any prior examples of active duty military being deployed to stop protests? I’ll qualify it by saying from the end of Reconstruction to present.
