and most of them not itemised. They expect us to take their word for after being caught in massive lies. (An earlier analysis found checked the highest few items and found that the actual saving was a small fraction of the claim.)

And China was NOT quick to negotiate. It seems like China knew that Trump would have to back down at least most of the way, because not doing so would damage the US economy too much.

and if they are no longer profitable (as would be the case for many companies if they fully absorbed the tariffs - they would be selling many products at a gross loss), then ultimately they will cease trading, resulting in many job losses, and unavailability of the products they imported.

Those companies are typically owned by Americans, and employ Americans. If they massively reduce their profits (often to the extent of making losses), they will have to make massive cuts, including layoffs and/or salary cuts,

Also, the question "Does he acknowledge that if companies don't absorb the full cost, Americans will have to pay?", while important, misses the point that if these companies (the U.S. importers) *do* absorb the cost, Americans are still paying.

MAGAs are cheering for these cuts, too stupid to realise they are the beneficiaries of the programmes being cut. Medicaid for example, and likely Social Security. (Actually, there are signs that some - still a minority of MAGAs - are starting to cop on.)

Dictators conflate the country with their regime, so when he talks about sovereignty, he means survival of his regime. Long term survival of his regime depends on suppression of the truth. Hence, it is incompatible with good journalism.
