This is the fate of science and scientists in 2025 in the US. It will take multiple generations at best to recover…🧪

“Historically, no one lived past age 35” "I’ve heard *so* many versions of this claim, including recently from a menopause doctor (implying menopause is not “natural” because noone lived long enough to go through it). Every time someone states this “fact,” a demographer loses a piece of their soul"

Yum, cancer 🤤

“This shit’s going into the White House.” I spoke to @rollingstone.com about how a group of tech billionaires with an extreme ideology penetrated Trump's White House. www.rollingstone.com/culture/cult...

“What we have in this generation of ... AI is essentially a business where there's 10,000 mostly white men who are benefiting and 8 billion people around the world who are being either exploited at a minimum or directly harmed...” — Roger McNamee ( @moonalice.com ) www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8dd...

“Tech entrepreneur pushes plan for ‘Silicon Valley 2.0’ on Bay Area waterfront.” SF Chronicle story on the bizarre "Frontier Valley" proposal mentions the Nerd Reich (thanks!) but not the Network State. Chron editors very committed to censoring that detail! www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

“Does the US President’s social media post mean people should evacuate Tehran in a serious, bombs-are-imminent sort of way or a silly, he’ll forget about it in the morning sort of way?” is an insane, nightmarish situation to be in

Posting this now before it gets overtaken by events. danieldrezner.substack.com/p/a-complica...

Border Patrol detained and deported an Australian writer who reported independently on the protests at Columbia, with CBP stating plainly they flagged him for that reason. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

this is the amazing (in a 42 car pileup kind of way) part of this article: the arrogance on display when confronted with reality and the refusal to accept said reality. Every bit as delusional as creationists.

I don’t care if it’s a bit.

i might put this differently and say that it’s always been a struggle, but if you’re under 30 years old, i could understand if you think elites have *always* been *this* immune from consequences

Exactly. Christian Nationalism is extremist but much of the media pretends otherwise, going out of its way to normalize a radical supremacist movement.

NEW: A court-appointed federal monitor has found that an NYPD unit championed by Mayor Eric Adams has been unjustly stopping and searching New Yorkers, almost all of them Black and Hispanic men, echoing the findings of a recent ProPublica investigation. By @ericumansky.bsky.social‬

In case you missed it…

British women are being jailed and shamed under archaic abortion laws. After more than a century and a half, this week, MPs could vote to change that. My col. on decriminalising abortion - and giving tens of millions of women a genuine right to choose. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Taking potshots at the freedom of the press in the midst of going after the right of the people peaceably to assemble.

Last 48 hours on this baby, and there's still stretch goals I'd love to see made - there's nothing but bangers between 60k and 100k, and I want to read as many as I can. Cosmic horror! Cosmic... HORROR! www.kickstarter.com/projects/gra...

This is an incredibly important commitment, and my congratulations to @neso-energy.bsky.social for getting this far. Running a stable electricity grid without gas isn't as simple as just switching it off. www.telegraph.co.uk/business/202...

As on the other site, I'm going to collect my longer threads about AI image synthesis and »platform realism« in one meta-thread, mainly to keep an overview for myself. So this is where we start ... 1/

They have no concept of a public good, and that's not great given that we live in a fucking society.

Conservative administrations exist to put public property into private hands. It's their overwhelming motivation: that people should own nothing, and everything is rent-seeking.

Call your congresspeople. Much of these are popular recreation areas. This is a way to privatize the places that people hike and camp in. Once we lose these areas we never get them back.

this is a terrific LA-based mutual aid group and I have donated to them in the past.

People will tell you that they view property destruction as equivalent to violence against a person, but that's not true. They think property destruction is worse

Hi everyone I was denied entry, detained, and deported from the USA over the last 48 hours because of my reporting on the Columbia student protests I arrived back in Melbourne hours ago and had my phone handed back to me upon landing

political press is doing a real disservice by basically not reporting the nuances of public opinion on deportations, and creating the appearance that most americans support the stephen miller-style gestapo tactics

Infants can literally just stop breathing and die with no warning from “whooping cough” (pertussis) infection. They do not necessarily even get the infamous cough that older children and adults get (and can be severe enough to break ribs). Do not let unvaccinated people around your newborns (or you)

I remember watching Ananda on MTV. She died at 52 from a preventable & treatable form of cancer bc she worried mammogram radiation would give her cancer. She then declined treatment when diagnosed, which she regretted when it was too late. The “wellness” industry is literally scaring people to death

I updated my article on Vance Boelter's theological tradition of violence. slowcivilwar.substack.com/p/on-the-chr...

Once again the correct response to this is to immediately push for a huge amnesty bill. If farm, hotel, and restaurant workers are so vital to the country that even donald trump can admit it, they should all be getting green cards now

It is firmly in the “somebody’s making an active decision to downplay this” territory.

I ended up in the Gowanus Whole Foods today and noticed all these signs and it took me a full beat to remember oh yeah, I wrote a whole article on why this week.

A product of a cult of special operations that led to a basic misunderstanding of how US military power is anchored on logistics systems and a global network of bases that allow the US to move what it needs when it needs it to where it is needed America used to master the boring shit that wins wars

The 3.5% rule comes from @chenoweth.bsky.social's incredible research. It's commonly misunderstood or misused in public discourse, but it's still a very helpful goal to aspire to. In my opinion, the biggest misconception is that you need to simply activate 3.5% of the public once.

This is the group I've recommended to several people. They should have some results in a few days.

felt like a good time to post this chestnut knock-la.com/tradition-of...

I reverse my earlier position on tubas

Forcing people to work for no pay is very on brand for the president. The thousands of National Guardsmen President Trump sent to Los Angeles in an authoritarian power play are working for free. https://trib.al/MZ7JPyY

hey remember that speech Eliot gives about the sheriff in the small town mayor’s court episode this year? Yeah. And go read @jesspish.bsky.social book.
