In short, the whole obesity narrative is BS

I'm relatively thin. I eat what I like when I like (a lot of it "processed"), exercise very little & have never dieted. My blood pressure is max 120/80 and my cholesterol is fine. I eat things with sugar in (can't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners). I'm lucky, not "disciplined"

Maybe it's just that Starmer is a right wing grifter and always was. Labour was just a way to get a seat and climb to the top. In other words, it's not about the votes. It's who he really is.

As long as he refuses to say, McSweeney is fine. It's when he declares absolute confidence in him that he needs to start packing his stuff into that cardboard box.

Contrary to popular belief, increased welfare payments actually lead to more people finding their way back into productive work. Cutting benefits is self-defeating

It's not an endless trajectory - it's a temporary growth resulting from previous abnormal occurrences (particularly the pandemic). Over time this will level out and possibly even trend back downwards A cut to benefits will however result in declining health outcomes which will soak up any "savings"

Unless of course by reform you mean universal basic income (which has proved successful if every case it's been trialled in) in which case I'm all for it.

"everyone" is actually just some people. There's a whole other "everyone" that disagrees.

Nothings perfect but "a few rich people will avoid it" sounds a lot better than "some disabled people will die"

Meanwhile, a well calculated wealth tax would do the same job without harming the most vulnerable in society and without the inevitable negative social consequences.
comment in response to post
A wealth tax on assets exceeding a threshold figure (e.g. 1% on >£6m) set at a level to deliver the same income as the welfare bill would theoretically save (although the welfare savings will inevitably resurface in places like the NHS and unemployment benefits)

Always 😉

That's how it's pitched but the very way it's constructed is designed to embed the belief that bad acts are always justifiable as an alternative to an even worse thing, when in fact there is almost always a better alternative.

Aside from the casual transphobia, it is worth remembering that these health warnings are very carefully worded so that they are not misinterpreted. It's not up to a journalist to decide that don't like a particular phrase. She actually mangled an important health message.

He really was excellent, and he got some great speeches to work with as well.

A trans woman IS a woman that was BORN a woman. You are your brain. Not whatever is between your legs.

And to be clear, if the report has said pregnant women she'd have been just as wrong to correct it. She doesn't have the authority, nor the expertise to change the wording of a scientific study without potentially changing it's meaning, and she definitely has no right to express partiality

She was wrong and she refuses to apologise for her lapse. That suggests she'll do it again. Hence she's not fit to present the news on the BBC and should stand down. And for those of you thinking she was correct, is a 14 y/o designated a woman when she's pregnant? I hope Martine doesn't think so

We can but hope

It was such an obviously stupid act of self harm. I'm still livid it was ever mooted as a option in the first place, let alone followed through on. The damage done to the everyday lives of all but the very richest in our society is unforgivable.

And when people say, "but it's just to cover the increased costs" maybe take a look at the reported profits for the following quarter and see if they go down or up. I guarantee you'll see a close correlation between increased prices and increased profit. Almost as if cost was never the issue.
