Really enjoyed your perspective in this interview—I’ve found it difficult in my own (admittedly limited) research to find specific cases of environmental impact, and I’m grateful you’ve provided such a resource. Looking forward to reading.

I think ‘The Blind Assassin’ makes a case (says random American)

December writes for the only newspaper in Pluto City—a digital refuge hidden from a raging civil war. When power outages begin to plague the city and her paper remains silent, she starts a covert exploration of what Pluto City really is, and what that makes her: savior or accomplice. a.co/d/84addl3

I recently rewatched Gremlins and had the same feeling.

Ooo, sticker partyyy (I know they aren’t stickers but I feel like people would stick them on things if they were). Btw, “don’t trip over what’s behind you” is an excellent thought. And the tone of these! Dark and buoyant at the same time *chefs kiss*

Interesting! I haven’t heard of this approach and am curious how it goes. I recently revised an ungainly novel and found it useful to break it into sequences and then think about how to increase the fidelity between internal and external stakes. Cleared up some plot/character problems I was having.

Sounds like you’re still getting words down on the page though! The novel shall be there.

Hi there, is there any room for a US-based speculative fiction writer with a debut coming out this March?

How cool. Nevada County Library was my childhood library.

I’m glad you dug it! Art is always subjective, and if we disagree about it it’s doing something right.

I dunno I think theme and character (and what characters say) are inextricable.

And so much of the movie hinges on the protag’s desire to make significant art, to take meaningful photographs. If we don’t know precisely what the people she’s photographing are dying for, I think it falls a little flat.

But I don’t think it delivered anything beyond oblique cultural references. Those are broad-stroke anti-government sentiments, but we don’t know anything about what the belligerents in the shooting scenes are arguing about with any specificity.

For one I totally agree *the scene* was fantastic. Plemons is so so good, and we all know what side of our political divide he represents. And yes we know which president is being referenced here. But I see those as oblique references that benefit from us all having paid attention to the news.

Which not every movie needs to be. But it’s what A24 is kind of known for and why I go to indie movies in the first place. Giving us a deeper sense of character, within that not-so-speculative milieu, would have made it more meaningful and resonant. Especially given the times we’re in.

I’m glad you got something out of it. I think I wanted more than a depiction of a possible scenario that required the cultural context in my head to color in what, for me, was missing. I went to the movie hoping it would give me some way to better understand the human condition.

Such a vague, hollow movie. But I think it was on purpose. Trying to recoup on a big budget civil war movie during a culture war means not saying anything that would piss anybody off (so as a result saying nothing of value, whatsoever). They didn’t even specify what the sides were fighting over.
