In case you're wondering, authoritarians use this strategy of escalation to manufacture crisis, provoke outrage, then use the reaction to justify repression. It’s not about restoring order, it's about creating a spectacle of chaos they can claim only they can control.

From NPR-- RFK Jr: "When my uncle was president, 3% of Americans had chronic disease-- today it's 60%." Actually, 2 out of 3 in the US were caused by chronic diseases in the 1960s: heart disease, cancer and stroke. Life expectancy was 8 years shorter than it is now. www.wesa.fm/2025-06-08/r...

ER doctor here! Please seek medical attention (go to the ER) if you are hit in the head with a ballistic. “Less lethal” weapons kill people all the time, in addition to causing permanent disabilities. If you don’t feel safe disclosing that you were protesting just say you were hit in the head, etc

The LA protests will trigger a drumbeat of "law and order" messaging from the White House and their media allies as a prelude to invoking the Insurrection Act. This is entirely predictable, and any Dem or media outlet that facilitates this narrative will be aiding Trump's authoritarian project.

Very smart, high ROI initiative from the Spencer Foundation. Providing bridge funding for canceled NSF grants: 1) directs funds to projects already screened by a top-noch review process. 2) avoids imposing proposal prep costs on researchers. 3) ameliorates the disruption from GOP sabotage.

We’ve lionized “disruptors” for too long rather than celebrating people who put their heads down and do hard but necessary work. Becoming an expert in your field and working out how to make iterative/evolutionary gains over the course of your career isn’t splashy but it’s how progress is made.

No evidence of immune exhaustion after repeated SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in vulnerable and healthy populations Does repeated vaccination cause "immune exhaustion"? No, the immune system can handle multiple hits from similar or different stimuli. It evolved to do so! www.nature.com/artic... 1/5

Why do current diagnostics struggle to detect Lyme disease? Our new preprint reveals highly localized immune responses: tissue and vascular responses dominate, while peripheral activation is minimal. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... #LymeDisease #Multiomics #Immunology A thread ⬇️

I can't overemphasize how bizarre and embarrassing this is for the head of our FDA to be repeating podcaster talking points about seed oils and flagrantly demonstrating that he doesn't know anything about evidence analysis or human nutrient requirements.

🚨”Besides outright canceling projects, NIH failed to distribute annual payments to more than 1,000 grants… In some cases, scientists have cut staff, paused hiring, trimmed back supplies or delayed experiments. Health officials have not explained which projects have been held up, why or for how long”

“It’s why every time an incremental vaccine restriction results in a public shrug, he feels emboldened to go a bit further.” This is important. First he takes away something people don’t care much about—Covid boosters—so that later it seems more normal when he takes away polio vaccines.

On the latest History of Vaccines blog, we take a look at the 1889 "Russian Flu" pandemic and its possible ties to a coronavirus more than a flu virus. Regardless of what caused it, it was the first global pandemic in the industrialized age. historyofvaccines.org/blog/first-p...

ASM maintains the critical need for a budget agreement that supports funding levels that will allow the U.S. to maintain its position as a scientific leader and address the public health needs of the American people. Read our statement: asm.org/press-releas...

Tuberculosis (TB) was once a leading killer in rich countries, but it’s now rare in those places. But TB still kills almost 1.3 million people every year, making it the world’s deadliest infectious disease.

RFK Jr celebrated the release of the MAHA report by downing raw milk shooters in the White House with influencer Paul Saladino. Hazards of raw milk include Listeria, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Yersinia, E. coli O157:H7, and now-- avian flu.

"This is a self-defeating and self-destructive strategy, if you call it a strategy. These students fill our labs and perform the research. They’re some of the smartest, most talented scientists in America. I have no idea how labs are going to operate without them.” www.nytimes.com/2025/05/31/u...

How bad will it be? Catastrophic. Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come. But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget. Speak up now before it is too late. (inflation adjusted $-s below)

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Thank you @joshuasweitz.bsky.social for making this visually effective set of plots that puts into perspective the scale of the announced cuts to NIH, NSF and NASA

I finally had a read of the MAHA report today, and aside from the obvious use of generative AI and false citations, what strikes me is how remarkably unprofessional and amateurish the document is. It's just wild garbage 1/n

Reading this Bloomberg story really makes it clear, at least to me, for the first time what the Trump global tariff fight is about. It's about finding revenue Trump needs to deliver his promised tax cuts.(free link) The whole thing implodes without this revenue www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

This was my plan for last spring. It's still my plan for this spring, mostly focused on the things I planned to get done last spring but didn't.
