Protester charged with throwing 'destructive device' at CHP from freeway overpass www.latimes.com/california/s...

This was either the worst or best week to finish Andor.

Graffiti at night. Cleanup in the morning. The night-and-day difference of L.A. protests w/ @haileybranson.bsky.social @rebeccaellis.bsky.social & @sherlyholmes.bsky.social www.latimes.com/california/s...

Working on a story about LAPD's tactics and use-of-force during protests in the past week. If you've been out there, or injured by a horse, rubber round, etc., feel free to DM me. Would love to hear about your experience.

For those that are new here, I occasionally do non-journalism things. I’m also a crime fiction author, and Saturday at 6 p.m. I’ll be wearing that hat instead, helping my friend Patricia Smith launch her debut novel, REMEMBER, at The Book Jewel.

I've been tear gassed, shot at with pepper balls and shoved by officers this week. And it's got nothing on some of the worst stuff that's gone down. Journalism is not a crime. Good piece from @liborjany.bsky.social www.latimes.com/california/s...

In these dark times, I’m willing to make sacrifices for journalism. Risk injury, give up time with my family, run myself to exhaustion. But shaving my beard for a gas mask fitting is TOO FAR. I haven’t been baby faced in like 15 years. What’s even under there?

Thread: L.A.'s top prosecutor -- D.A. Nathan Hochman -- just announced felony charges against eight defendants for assaults on police, burglary and vandalism. He expects to bring dozens of more cases.

President Trump's federal prosecutor in L.A. is "coming after" protesters. In some cases - where explosives or cinder blocks were hurled - that follows past precedent. But in others, is he running afoul of the 1st Amendment? Latest w/ @brittnymejia.bsky.social www.latimes.com/california/s...

LAPD confirming at least 25 arrests for curfew violations tonight.

.@LAPDHQ now chasing people up Temple. The crowd is dwindling and has largely dispersed. Could’ve done without the officer shoving me in response to a reminder that media is exempt from the curfew. Oh well, they’re just laws I guess.

Faith leaders lead march through downtown L.A. as curfew takes hold www.latimes.com/california/l...

LAPD has now declared an unlawful assembly at Temple and Los Angeles and, also citing Mayor Bass’ curfew, appears to be gearing up for arrests.

As LAPD was trying to establish its skirmish line they had mounted officers ride through traffic, on Temple. Once again, a person was caught in the path and knocked to the ground. Didn’t get video, but person popped back up and thankfully didn’t look that hurt.

Curfew is now in effect. LAPD demanding people leave area pushing them up Temple. Someone threw a glass bottle at cops and they have fired less lethal rounds in that direction. There are some protesters stuck on Los Angeles between Temple and Aliso in front of federal building.

As faith leaders have a crowd take a knee and pray outside the federal building, DHS officers raise their weapons at priests and National Guard members lineup with riot shields against them tonight in downtown L.A.

After several wild nights in downtown L.A., faith leaders held a rally in Grand Park calling for strong non-violent resistance to what they called “reprehensible” actions in the city by ICE and the Trump Administration. They are now holding a peaceful march toward the Metro Detention Center.

CHP arrested 67 people as a result of this.

We’re in questionable legal territory again — CHP has blocked both ends of Commerical between Alameda and Garey adjacent to the 101. No dispersal order or arrests, but there is media stuck in the area they’ve blocked off.

A small group of protesters has blocked the 101 South again. CHP had blocked off the exits but failed to account for a series of wholes in an adjacent chainlink fence.

Lil Scoop (considering local news priorities) — An L.A. probation officer has been arrested, accused of supplying drugs in a juvenile hall where a teen died of an overdose in 2023. My latest: www.latimes.com/california/s...

All of L.A. is not a ‘war zone.’ We separate facts from spin and disinformation amid immigration raids, protests throughout the city. Latest w/ @karenmg.bsky.social @tarantulaarms.bsky.social www.latimes.com/california/s...

Since we desperately need some good news... happy pub day to @blacktopkid.bsky.social -- the modern crime fiction master is back with KING OF ASHES, which I am looking forward to tearing into if I ever have a day off again: us.macmillan.com/books/978125...

Spoke with BBC Radio this morning alongside @acatwithnews.bsky.social to discuss the continued demonstrations and deployment of federal law enforcement and the military in Los Angeles. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Burned vehicles. Motorcycle crashes. Concrete hurled off freeways. While the majority of protesters I’ve seen have been peaceful, we took a look at those causing destruction that’s drawing the ire of many watching L.A. www.latimes.com/california/s...

L.A. law enforcement has long avoided conducting civil immigration enforcement. Now, the LAPD has been drug to the front lines of Trump's immigration crackdown. Latest from me, @liborjany.bsky.social and Connor Sheets (who needs to move to BSky already) www.latimes.com/california/s...
