It is so profoundly important to the Trumpian Rs to punish those who are, according to their schema of deservingness, undeserving.

I seriously thought a fairly conventional conservative position was that rights aren't bestowed by governments, but by God or nature. "Endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights," etc. How does Donalds (or any citizen supporting his statement here) square these sentiments?

This seems relevant. fortune.com/2025/02/20/h...

Genuine question: since this child is an American citizen, should we even use the term "deportation"? Is "extrajudicial removal" or "unconstitutional ejection" or something more apt?

Thanks. It really is mystifying how the person of Trump himself--his motives, his meaning, his fortunes--is so central to the MAGA movement. They're less interested in conservatism as a collection of principles; they're very interested in elevating and protecting this one awful person, Trump.

Another excellent thread. Thanks. One question: during the '24 campaign, Trump explicitly said that his tariffs would inflict pain on other nations, not American consumers. That contradicts the "we'll need to feel short-term pain" message they're now using. How does MAGA resolve this contradiction?

Preach. It's also not how being a mature and thoughtful person living in a human society works. It is, however, how a certain type of sociopathy works.

Excellent thread. Thanks. Your point about hatred of writing by people who hate complexity seems applicable to the rise of GenAI. AI "writing" skips the essential point of writing: working out your thinking. I had never considered the relationship between autocracy and AI like this.

People are seduced into autocracy by their hatred of bureaucracy, which is really their hatred of democracy, which is really their hatred of anyone controlling them, which is really their hatred of controlling themselves.

I wrote (ok, found) a poem about this claim in 2020! poetryoftrump.scherschligt.com/2020/02/11/i...

An important distinction: Trump didn't "claim" that Biden's pardons were invalid; he actually "declared" that they were. That's far worse. Trump is here assuming a power a POTUS never had. He is an autocrat, and he speaks like one. Let's stop this habit of equivocating for him.

"if" in the headline would be funny, if it weren't so sad.

I can't help but notice that the Governor's tweet essentially says that DOGE isn't fundamentally about economics and costs, but about culture wars.

Not just extremist; "absolutist." That was the word Musk used. And yet we get this.

I thought the same thing. It was clear, legible, informative. I even saw some viewers complaining that it looked similar to the phone settings of elderly people. Well, old people set up their phones like that for a reason. Old people also watch football. We should celebrate accessible design!

Sounds like I'm in the minority, but I appreciate that they prioritized legibility and accessibility. The first job of design is to solve the user problem; I think this does that better than something aggressively condensed.

Cloak and Dagger, with Dabney Coleman? Great movie.

A few years ago, "take the points" meant "bet on the underdog plus the point spread." Then fans & media started using the same phrase to mean "try a field goal." It's ridiculous because the points aren't guaranteed. I think ppl say it because the gambling sense made them comfortable with the phrase!

"We shall see," said Big Max. -- I think of this every time I hear or say "we shall see."

This franchise has made many smart decisions in recent years. This is not one of them.

Thanks for this, and for all you do. In the aftermath of Nov's election, I've been looking for the wise, genuine, and trustworthy defenders of democracy and American foundations. You're at the top of the list of voices I will continue to follow.
