I’ve spent cumulative years in much less nice shipping containers & it was fine but I also didn’t have to share it with 7 other people & my captors in transit to a gulag or war zone.

Spanish has consistently been one of the most useful things I learned in high school and university. It’s been a primary or supplementary skill in nearly every job I’ve had.

I don’t think guard or military would panic fire, but I do think it is completely possible to manufacture enough consent that they would see it reasonable & legal to fire into a crowd. Designating antifa as terrorists, invoking the insurrection act, but taken further.

I 0% believed GWB but I fully believe Elon is dumb enough to voluntarily get punched in the face. At the time I thought GWB was back on the sauce.

Typical earthling bias. Sadly, I’m forced to agree.

Counterprotesters were triumphant as rally goers & SPD left at the end of the night but I don’t think the counterprotest affected when mayday or SPD departed. Maybe it made loading trucks slightly slower. It was still brave as fuck to face down armed SPD & (probably) armed right wing hate.

I can’t know the family’s thoughts but if I somehow learned that they’d planned to be provocative with their kids there it would match what I saw. It was an ugly scene. SPD barging in and making it physical (from what I could see about 50’ away) made it way worse.
comment in response to post
Several in the crowd literally threw themselves between the family & the rest of the counterprotesters. The dad still got in a very heated shouting match, holding his two kids in front of him.

I’m a Bluesky idiot & can’t figure out how to quote-post into a thread. The family I saw approach the crowd of counterprotesters yesterday made me think. I happened to pass them on the street after leaving city hall. The mom also had an infant strapped to her. A mixed race couple out for a stroll.

Moreover, I fully believe that they would’ve treated a large pro-trans rally in whatever town they’re from far worse than they were treated yesterday. Small town WA was horrible to its own children in 2020 & they haven’t gotten any more tolerant. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/u...

Seemed less escalatory than videos I saw of Cal Anderson where they were charging into crowds of entirely peaceful people.

What’s with all the vibrators? Saw a bunch of these on the sidewalk.
comment in response to post
SPD leaving about 50 or 60 protesters to have a dance party on the sidewalk in front of City Hall. I’m out.

The box truck pulls away from the last chant of “We’re trans, we’re gay, we’re gonna scare your ass away!” Cheers. SPD still here. It was tense until an equilibrium was established. Maybe because no one really wanted violence? All the escalation I saw was from SPD.
comment in response to post
The box truck got here. SPD and beefy maydays form a line and roll their cases out while chants and the bell from before sound loudly.
comment in response to post
I feel like Mayday USA is waiting for a second box truck to load their gear into but it’s been quite a while since the last one left. Just proof that good logistics make good neighbors.
comment in response to post
Maybe the most tense part of the evening, the few remaining mayday rally goers are backed into a corner while the remaining protesters surround them shouting “Go home fasciste!” SPD just looks on.
comment in response to post
A small group of beefy looking Mayday USA rally goers are standing apparently to guard the remaining sound gear from a slightly larger group of less beefy counterprotesters. One counter is ringing a bell loudly, which is an effective way to raise the tension I gotta say.
comment in response to post
Ugh the rally organizers were “hurriedly” breaking down and cleaning up. Of all my typos, I regret this one the most.
comment in response to post
A lone protester in bloc with a trans flag just … walked onto the city hall steps plaza, past cops and rally “safety” line. They’re just waving their flag and chilling behind the cops facing protesters on the steps.
comment in response to post
A small group of Mayday USA, rally organizers are horridly, breaking down and cleaning up the sound system. They are now significantly outnumbered by counter protesters, but still protected by SPD.

Normal traffic is returning. No more LRAD announcements in a minute. Earth groups of counter protesters are meeting, joining numbers. A few remain in the street, counter to SPD instructions. There’s motion towards City Hall steps.
comment in response to post
The police have broken their line. LRAD asking people to leave the street. A few are sitting down. I’m guessing that means all the Mayday USA rally goers have left.
comment in response to post
A couple counterprotesters have left but about 50 remain in the street on 5th ave, apparently uninterested in leaving.
comment in response to post
LRAD rhetoric slowly escalating while the crowd chants “Trans rights are human rights!”

SPD LRAD “Ladies and gentlemen, this event has concluded. Please allow rally goers to depart. We asked that you remain peaceful. Move to your vehicles or transportation.” Sounds like an instruction to disperse. Not many dispersing.

More like 59 or 60 counterprotesters heckling. Line of bike cops poised to make arrests right behind them.
comment in response to post
Squad of bike cops left City Hall steps and are behind the counter protesters who are heckling the departing rally goers, who are protected by a line of cops
comment in response to post
Seems like the Mayday USA rally is ending, energizing the counter protester chants. Some people are running up to 5th Ave, anticipating rightly that SPD is channeling rally goers through City Hall. Maybe 30 or 40 people ran up there, while there are still several hundred rally goers.
comment in response to post
Got to see a Mayday USA attendee bobbing his head along with the (very catchy) chant of “Trans rights are under attack. What do we do?” “STANG UP FIGHT BACK.” Little moments.
comment in response to post
Counter protester crowd on this side, has gotten both thin and spread out. Hard to estimate because it’s scattered over most of a block but from a peak of maybe 150 to 175, now down to about 100 to 120. Looks like abt the same at the other barricade at 4th & James.
comment in response to post
There’s definitely a sense of tensions escalating. I’ve seen the right wingers who were walking through the crowd, having conversations earlier now running away from apparent confrontations.
comment in response to post
Aside from the King 5 reporter early on, none of the camera crews have any markings or identification. The scuffle a moment to go resulted in at least one arrest.
comment in response to post
SPD marked up so naturally violence starts. Although I don’t think it was a good idea for the family to approach, there was never any apparent danger until SPD arrived. The dad is holding his two kids and screaming. Now telling to what looks like a tv camera crew.
comment in response to post
A couple holding an American flag with two young kids, walked up and is trying to get into the Mayday USA rally. They’ve stopped at the crowd of counter protesters. Lots of shouting.
comment in response to post
Pushing two hours since this started. How late will it go? And more importantly, how will SPD behave when the 300 to 500 Mayday USA rally goers start to leave?
comment in response to post
Chatted with a reporter claiming to be from “channel 13.” I didn’t go on record.
comment in response to post
Mayday USA speakers have said a couple times that they still have “500 to 1000 people trying to get in.” I do not see where these people could be.
comment in response to post
A new Mayday USA speaker declares that marriage is a “sacred union between one man and one woman,” then that this is a land founded on liberty. Amazingly I can detect no irony in their voice at all.
comment in response to post
Nothing suspicious here.
comment in response to post
Countercounterprotesters lurking. They were conferring (not debating) with some of the right wingers walking through the counterprotest.
comment in response to post
A couple small groups of countercounterprotesters filter through the crowd, mostly engaging people in conversations where neither side is getting convinced at all. Only 1 or 2 seem interested in confrontation.
comment in response to post
I crossed back over to 4th & Cherry. Counterprotester crowd has filled in slightly. Not quite as many cops here now but I’m sure they’re very close. Countercounterprotester here is shouting anti-trans rhetoric in a bullhorn. Someone is playing the siren on theirs to counter them.
comment in response to post
A trickle of people coming to join the mayday USA rally come by where I am, which is a relatively thin part of the crowd. Entrance is where I was before, which is probably why there was heavier SPD presence there.
comment in response to post
A passerby (doesn’t seem like a counterprotester) said to the spd at this barricade that the mayday USA rally is “cool.” SPD officer smiled and nodded in apparent agreement.

“Calls grow” from right wingers who’ve never been to Seattle before.
