it's cool that we managed to put machines on mars that can take and send pictures and i support space exploration as a public endeavor and public good, but holy fuck everything we've seen out there is so much uglier and less cool than our own planet

I really don't get the logic of deep space exploration as a public endeavor.
I only get it if I assume the logic of colonizers and the larger military arm of that effort.
Maybe not *people* in space, but probes and robots in space is very worthwhile for the purpose of education and study. Material science is heavily benefitted by it.
But y'know, like, AFTER we put the fires out here.
Like that kinda proves my point: manned space exploration is a hobby for rich people to have fun and be "curious", at our expense.
Most people live in lava tubes on the moon or various asteroid mining stations. Earth is "protected."
It's closer, easier, cheaper, and will produce much more value to the progress of space colonization.
I'm already planning to put a southern plantation house on that hill riiiight over there.
I can't wait to sit on my porch and stare at miles of dust for 1.4 seconds before spontaneously combusting
For now
We have only recently started getting good at it, and we're still far from where we want to be.
Only way you're getting people living on that thing is some Star Wars style cloud cities in a more habitable layer a bit further up.
Mars with its whole "no magnetosphere to protect from cosmic radiation and solar winds, ensuring the atmosphere always blows away into space" is actually a terrible colony choice

But oooooo just mars
Probably sucks for humans - But I can't hate mars as a planet.

And that we can change that, we just have to (collectively) decide to.

Currently launching nukes at Lake Superior.
I mean, unless itβs as part of a bitchinβ Starfleet team or something.
I kind of want to get good at art so I can express it.
Treaties banning any type of fire are pretty funny though, and useful for collecting atmospheric data.
Just in case.
Boobulous and its moon itty bitty
One is mostly salts, the other arbitrarily complex. Especially when life is involved.
Terraforming new worlds is not a realistic suggestion. The technology and energy required for that would be many many orders of magnitude greater than anything that we currently possess. Pure fiction.
Even Musk doesn't matter, his efforts are just a fart in the puddle, a stunt.
We can't save Earth without space, we need to move heavy industry offworld.
I also get the side of the argument that says that we should worry about climate change now and about Sol turning into a red giant later, tho lol
