The most frustrating thing about the last 6 months is just how much my colleagues and fellow students at Harvard have consistently underestimated the threat Trump posed. I was told I was overreacting and things won't be that bad. And yet, it is and it can still get so much worse.

As House Republicans pass a budget bill that takes from the poor to finance tax cuts predominantly for the rich, Trump is hosting a dinner for investors in his crypto business who spent a total of $394 million to gain access to him. It's clear who they really serve.

Trump is fixating on Harvard because they represent a community that he could never be a part of based upon merit. This is at the core of every malignant narcissist's pathology, deep insecurity and a bottomless craving for acceptance and legitimacy.

Just to be clear, Trump is literally throwing a dinner party for these antisemites and racists at his golf club in Virginia even as we speak.

OMG. The so-called BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL has a one-sentence dirty little secret in it that every American, regardless of party, needs to know. 🚨 IT'S CRITICAL TO SHARE WIDELY, off Bsky, too! It would be a STUNNING Viktor-Orbán-style restriction on the power of Federal courts, including the SCOTUS. 1/6

This is a powerful indictment of how badly elites failed during the 2024 election to alert voters to the full scale of the threat of corruption and authoritarianism that Trump posed, from @mikepod.bsky.social on the pod. Transcript here: newrepublic.com/article/1956...

🚨🚨🚨 #PA07 Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R) just voted to strip away healthcare from up to 80,000 of his own constituents. Mackenzie won by 1.0 point last year. Dems have overperformed in Special Elections by 15 points so far this year. Donate to flip #PA07 today: secure.actblue.com/donate/house...

Three things made the US a rich and powerful nation: the rule of law, its science & innovation system, and openness to foreign talent. Remarkable how Trump has taken a sledgehammer to all three. No enemy of this country could do more.

There's a lotta concern about the short run (ie recession or not) implications of Trump's agenda. Dani is right to point to the long run as far far more consequential.

America is in danger of experiencing an academic brain drain  economist.com/science-and-...

You're seeing America kamikaze itself into a brick wall. It didn't have to be this way. But greed and racism, our two sins, will be our downfall. Too many people still with their hands in the sand.

🚨🚨🚨 #NY17 Rep. Michael Lawler (R) just voted to strip away healthcare from up to 92,000 of his own constituents. Lawler won by 6.3 points last year. Dems have overperformed in Special Elections by 15 points so far this year. Donate to flip #NY17 today: secure.actblue.com/donate/house...

Sometimes I'm surprised by the ideas I need to explain, but I'll still happily do it. Bankruptcy can work well when you're running a company, but it doesn't work when you're running a country.

BREAKING: SCOTUS allows Trump to fire two independent board members without just cause. The decision clears the way for challenges to 90 years of legal precedent on agency independence. From: @jaknutson.bsky.social & @yuniorarivas.bsky.social www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

Let’s be clear: The Trump regime is trying to destroy the nation’s oldest institution of higher learning if it doesn’t knuckle under to fascist control. This is what a dictatorship looks like.

INBOX: Bloomberg publishes an “atlas” to the Trump family’s “money-making machine”: “.. In any other era, this scale of presidential moneymaking would threaten to be the story of the year, but political uproar has hogged most of the attention.” @bloomberg.com www.bloomberg.com/features/202...

We're an hour away from President Trump's meme coin dinner, where he'll again cross what was once seen as an ethical red line: profiting off the presidency www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202... @cqzakrz.bsky.social

If I’m correct, it seems like the Supreme Court just ruled that there’s no such thing as an independent agency unless ending the independence of said agency would destroy the US economy

I don’t mean to be a caricature, but this just isn’t law. The Supreme Court is always making policy. But this is beyond. “This dicta in an emergency order will reassure the markets but just uh trust us on the law here ok no we’re not overruling Humphrey’s yet and when we do we’ll spare the fed.”

Mussolini’s Italy expelled university professors who opposed fascism. Franco’s Spain replaced university academics with regime loyalists Nazi Germany removed Jewish professors & left-leaning scholars. Academia is a threat to unified ideology. It’s why fascist regimes always target it.

As I wrote previously, "There is simply no principled way for the Supreme Court to retain the Fed’s removal protections while overturning Humphrey’s Executor and statutory protections for other agencies." And today's opinion shows it. www.lawfaremedia.org/article/repe...

As an aside, this paragraph from the NY Times story also proves that the claims that the bill wouldn't have passed if 3 Dems hadn't passed away is nonsense. Even if all 3 Dems had been alive to vote for it I guarantee the GOP would've found a way to squeeze that third vote out of the remaining few.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court just effectively overruled 90 years of precedent on the shadow docket, greenlighting Trump's firing of multi-member agency leaders while their cases are pending—despite Congress' effort to protect them against removal. A huge decision. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

The anti-Tesla movement is one of the most successful cases of social coordination in American history. In the span of six months the Tesla brand has been made radioactive. This isn’t a subjective view. You can see it in the data.

JUST IN 🚨: 30-Year Mortgage Rate jumps to 7.5%, one of the highest levels this century 👀

I wouldn't have been able to attend graduate school at the University of Michigan without student loans. When I think it can't get worse, MAGA never disappoints. Cruelty is the point. Stupidity is their calling card.

Demonstrators are yelling. "Shame, shame, shame" and "Trump is a traitor" outside of his Virginia golf course, where 200 of the cryptocurrency buyers are preparing for a private dinner with the president of the United States

Just to be clear, there is zero authority under 8 CFR §214.4 (or, alternatively, under 22 CFR §62.60) for any of this; Noem is acting recklessly and lawlessly here. And, while this won't stand in court, the intent is to jam up Harvard in every direction (see also the denial of NSF GRFP grants).

BREAKING: #SCOTUS allows Trump to fire labor board members. Apparent 6-3 decision with all liberal justices in dissent. Court says more harm from denying POTUS right to remove officials than from those officials staying in office. Doc: www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

Tariff-fuelled inflation is different: It causes prices to rise, but there's no reason to expect wage rises to follow. The result is an enduring cut in your real wages and purchasing power.

I hate being right. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/t...

Also: I assume Harvard will try to sue fast and fix things, but the cruelty this letter unleashes *today* will induce lasting fear and panic not just on the 6800 international students at Harvard, but also on all international students in this country, even if there is a swift TRO. Why stay here?

Trump Has Cut Science Funding to Its Lowest Level in Decades www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

I never want to hear again, in my lifetime, that the GOP is concerned about meeting the challenge of rising China in global economic & geopolitical competition.

academic folks: Harvard international students may need to begin immediately transferring out in order to avoid having to leave the country If it sounds insane, that's because it is what will your institutions do to help?

6800 people who already probably have leases for next year, spent years of their lives working to get to where they were now upended because Trump and Noem and Stephen Miller want to crush a major export sector of this economy, oh, and also a source of cures for diseases and knowledge of all sorts.

What Trump did to Harvard today 👇

A major escalation of the ongoing weaponization of the federal government against institutions that are deemed insufficiently obedient. This isn't about Harvard, specifically: This is an authoritarian regime weaponizing the state to force civil society institutions into submission.

Since the Senate is caving to the Trump Admin’s demands, we will sue to protect California’s longstanding authority to maintain clean vehicle standards.    President Trump may be playing partisan games with lives and good paying jobs on the line—but CA won’t back down. oag.ca.gov/news/press-r...

The GOP's rollback of efficiency standards will cost US consumers $43 billion, cool cool cool.

For the June issue of TNR: I went long on the problems with the recent wave of abortion rights ballot initiatives, focusing on Missouri, which “won” back their rights in November, but for most Missourians, abortions are still nearly impossible to get.
