When I left Toronto 8 years ago I was certain I would see my neighbourhood again. As I walk through this Saskatoon hood I have lived for six years it’s unlikely I will return here when I visit the city, other than a ride down 8th street, notable for being awful in every way Queen West isn’t.

I fumbled a piece of peanut buttered bread, but managed to catch it without making a mess. That's as much excitement as I need today.

This is a spread from my #photobook Portraits of Queen West: Spadina to Bathurst. We thought we were sold out, but my publisher opened an unlabelled box and SURPRISE! — we have more copies to sell! By a copy and smooth my relocation to Ontario! blackeye.ca/product/port...

My publisher found one more box of Bathurst to Spadina books! Get a copy while they last… This really is our last box. blackeye.ca/product/port...

Some trees have flourished on Queen West, but this one was doomed once the lot was redeveloped. 223 & 225 Queen St W, June 2010 & August 2024 #documentaryphotography

End of month, we move from Saskatoon to Hamilton. I loved growing up in Saskatoon in the 70s. Dear friends live here, but it's not the same place. The pandemic sabotaged efforts to reconnect with the city. Meanwhile, my pictures tether me to Ontario. 928 & 924 Queen St W, May 2007 & August 2024

I've packed my three tall bookshelves into boxes and dismantled the shelves. The biggest job of packing for my move is done. If I had no books, moving would be easy. Is that what life is like for the book-free? Ready to pick up and move at a moment's notice?

@cageyratfish.bsky.social Rubber kitty is discoloured. She has been on a high shelf for years and is almost chocolate coloured now.

I can grumble about many changes in this Toronto neighbourhood, but I love that trees have flourished. There’s much more shade. 988 Queen St W, April 2011 & August 2024 #documentaryphotography

This one was a quick, satisfying assembly for a little break from packing. It’s always nice to finish something I started 14 years ago. Queen St W from Gladstone to Northcote, June 2011 #documentaryphotography #cityblock

It's Toronto Comic Arts Festival weekend. Last year, my publisher sold 31 copies of my photobook at TCAF! People with comics on their minds were happy to look at "Spadina to Bathurst," and a few dozen took copies home! I wish I had more books to sell! (I'm working on that.)

Looking south down Abell near Queen, April 2002 & May 2014 My studio overlooked 48 Abell. I lived next to ground zero of a condo eruption. That’s why I take these pictures. I stood here last summer but didn’t shoot this view. I’ll do that this year. #documentaryphotography #photography

Moving. I'm digging into a serpentine storage area, for the 1st time since stuffing it 6 years ago when we moved in, dreading that it's full of media that must be sorted into KEEP and TOSS piles. There's stuff to sort, but much of it is containers and collapsed boxes. Moving supplies. Good outcome.

If you don't do it enough, back up your photos! Have redundant systems. Make it impossible to lose pictures in a single event. I learned my lesson in 2003, when I accidentally trashed the only folder with this file. This 500x332 jpg from my website reminds me what I lose when I don't back up.

1176 Queen St W, March 2009 & August 2024 I wouldn't notice changes of utility pole placement and height if I didn't take the pictures. #documentaryphotography #photography #toronto

This corner is a nice spot for a sit-down café with a patio, but Starbucks' bean counters no longer value customers hanging around. 1030 Queen St W 1. Aug 2024, 2. Jul 2014, 3. May 2011, 4. Jun 2006 #documentaryphotography #photography

The Spacing Store has ordered my publisher's last copies of my Bathurst to Spadina book. You can get it retail from Spacing while copies last, but we officially sold out the 500 print run. (Ok, I have a few extra copies that might make it into circulation when I return to Ontario.)

North side of Queen West from Beaconsfield to Lisgar, Aug 2024 (assembled 2025) Alternate edit. This is better. I'll skip trying to force a front elevation view in the future. The Drake extension bulges in the middle of the block, looming over the Saigon Flower. #photography #panorama

1144 Queen St W. Images from 2000-2017. Now the Drake Hotel extension. I made this in 2022 as an Instagram Reel. I was able to pair it with a Philip Glass piece à la Koyaanisqatsi. That was fun, but I resented Meta’s push for free video content. I stopped making reels and made a book instead.

I took this snapshot during my visit to Toronto last summer. Before I left T.O. in 2017, the Drake Hotel empire had expanded into the vintage buildings next door. Now the Drake expansion looms over the Saigon Flower. #documentaryphotography 1138 Queen St W, August 2024

This is another of my most frequently photographed addresses. I've only shared the 2017 shot previously. 1108-1106 Queen St W 1. Aug 2024 2. Feb 2017 3. Sept 2012 4. April 2011 #photography #documentaryphotography #slowart

Things change quickly! When I posted this in March, I had no inkling I'd have an escape plan so soon! I'll be moving my headquarters east to modest Hamilton, Ontario. It's all the access to Toronto I need. Compared to Saskatoon, it's just a bit west of Parkdale. Details later.

Parkdale, Toronto. Queen St W at O'Hara Ave, February 2006 One Instagram follower commented: "at this coffee time it was ALWAYS a full moon." #photography #documentaryphotography

OMG, I'm trying to read an article online and ads are continuously cycled in that cause the main column of text to reflow with new line breaks. There is way too much ad tech that actively interferes with reading. Worse things are going on in the world than shitty ad tech but I still hate it.

Queen & Spadina, looking east, Oct 2000 When I opened my early catalog to get other shots, I saw this one with new eyes. I'll make a point to match this photo this fall, 25 years later. Taken with a Nikon Coolpix 990, the first digital I owned. #photography #documentaryphotography

The fashion remained popular into the new millennium. From my collection, January 2001

I am dumbfounded so many mainstream news sites continue to use the design pattern of embedding an unrelated video at the top of a news article.
