Which kind of gets at my first questioning. I think that 49% number is probably hard to directly compare to “part time jobs outside of faculty positions.” There’s so much variation in faculty ranks and roles compared to a normal “40 hours or 37.5 hours is full time” kind of job.
comment in response to post
If you dig into the AAUP website they say that full time is “those designated as full-time employees in the institutions payroll system.” So I’m sure there’s quite a bit of weirdness in variations between institutions

So yah it does seem to come from the single year contract folks who probably actually have a 9 month contract and thus are part time? Quick math from our employment stats put us at about 15% part time faculty by what we officially report. I think the “contingent/adjunct” status is the real issue
comment in response to post
Where is that statistic from? (It certainly meets the “shocking” part of the prompt but I’m also in higher ed and it seems hard to imagine)

Yes! Like it’s fine (and productive!) to debate on issues with valid both sides. The problem is that isn’t what happens anymore! And the culture needs to stop acting like arguing with bad faith actors is productive.

I think just seeing that so many other people feel the same way you do makes you feel like you’re not going completely crazy (and this is in fact making a tangible difference, especially in more purple/red areas). I think smaller protests mattered more than the big city ones in some ways.

Nice. Yah I think the one thing the tea party did well was drape themselves in the mythology of America. We need to claim that now, since we’re the only ones who actually believe in real freedom anymore. Letting people live their own fucking lives is like America 101

Is this where trump is sitting?
comment in response to post
My partner did a similar version for our protest!
comment in response to post
My take is that it’s cuz it ties directly into the founding mythology of the country. It helps to tie directly into Americana. You could see that with the tenor of the signs at the protests

We were there! Rainy but inspiring!

Gotcha, I can see how it would help and it’s still quite impressive!

Do his dewclaws and back paws not need to be trimmed? The dewclaws on our golden are his sharpest. (Also Brian is a very good and smart boy obvs!)

And of course that’s in nominal terms. If we take inflation into account, this budget puts NSFs funding at levels not seen since like the Carter administration. Which you know was famously a very different time in terms of science and engineering
comment in response to post
This is the proposed budget. And it is far worse than any cuts that have been made thus far. For NSF they are asking for less than half of last years enacted budget and would put funding back to levels not seen since 2000. It would end U.S. scientific dominance
comment in response to post
Also the energy number is misleading. It is only an increase due to NNSA and Defense related spending. All the other things that DOE does (efficiency, science, renewables, etc) are seeing drastic cuts

I think it’s important to say “actually you did vote for this, whether or not you ‘meant to.’ This is why you can’t vote for Republicans again in the future if you don’t actually believe in this kind of thing” They do need to take some responsibility for the wreckage they’re causing
comment in response to post
The framing of this is just horrible. The “they/them commercial” was a disgusting attack on unfairly demonized citizens of our nation and should have been vigorously called out as such. That is what the response should have been then and what the response should be now
comment in response to post
ah interesting!

I think GMS field has the same dimensions as YS2 right? Which is slightly different than YS3

There’s also an argument to be made that if Harris wasn’t going to make it “clearing the deck” *could* be helpful down the line. Not sure I buy it but it’s a reasonable point of debate (allows for a completely clean break, new leadership in 4 years, etc)

Jesus’ historicity is pretty well agreed upon by scholars. As to his divinity, that’s a matter of faith. (Speaking as another “very”Catholic person … who does still go to church but struggles mightily with the doctrine)
comment in response to post
This … makes no sense on so many levels
comment in response to post
When I see these numbers I’m just shocked at how little we spend on R&D as a species. We spend like the equivalent of 100 F35s for the entire NSF budget. And they’re slashing that! Just pure insanity.

Pretty simple “golden rule” type stuff in my view. No other real extenuating factors needed

One of the “pillars” of my worldview is that AIM was the last good social network and the fall of AIM to inferior networks leads directly to the current state of affairs

It’s often hard to be Catholic with the way Christianity in America distorts and perverts the humanity and humility of Jesus. Thankful for Holy Week tying me to my youth and heritage and seeing the words of a Pope who, though a sinner like us all, believes that we are meant for more.

I have adjusted to being on a team with Bill Kristol and Rick Wilson. I will even (barf) welcome David Brooks to the coalition. What I don't understand is how so many Democratic leaders are still hemming and hawing about bipartisanship while these guys are like "ABOLISH ICE, TAKE THE STREETS"

I had to dig in further after your earlier point … really interesting and not great that we are considering this since it’s totally self-induced!

An article that gets to this in a different way Re: Brexit+inflation. But the point is similar. If tariffs “reduce aggregate supply” by raising cost of that supply, then the “growth in aggregate demand may need to be slowed.” In this argument, reducing rates would certainly exacerbate the problem.
comment in response to post
I was gonna ask that question too. I hadn’t heard it put like this before but it’s interesting to consider. (Speaks to how the normal way of operating breaks down when a moron is in charge). Thanks!
comment in response to post
The federal government does not need taxes (income or tariff or whatever) to fund programs. We need to get away from that thinking. But also he’s an idiot and tariffs are idiotic.
comment in response to post
Trump tariffs are dumb and bad. MMT is good and true and supported by many actual economists.

As a cis hetero white guy - I’m also confused as to what things he “wasn’t able to say” that aren’t also just things that “people who are trying to not be assholes” tend to not say.

The only explanation I’ve seen that made a lick of sense is that he heard the economics term “basket of goods” and his brain worms made him think that’s what people are calling groceries now in everyday speech or something …

There is zero reason to “pay down the debt” and certainly not at the expense of funding things like the NIH that you know keep people from dying…

The way it’s clipped together, it really feels like the consultants made sure to select the most meaningless focus group driven bits of nonsense they could find to put this mess together

There needs to be a “multiply your like by 1000” for how spot on this point is. We know they’re hypocrites but it’s baffling when they’re treated like they’re not and it makes the sane amongst us question the very fabric of reality.
