The File isn't very long also I was on a flight that was delayed this morning.

The File by Timothy Garton Ash is sublime, just a fantastic book to read In This Moment. The conclusion is a crescendo that I'll think about for a while. Pair it with Stasiland by Anna Funder for a full look at what it's like to live in East Germany.

Also I've seen pretty much every Democratic politician decry violence. This whole discourse is just a big game of telephone where the originator is some tankie on Bluesky who's on like 200 block lists

Again, I don't think fomenting civil unrest helps Trump. I'm willing to stick my neck out on a brave take like this.

arnade is rich finance guy who made a hobby of taking bad photographs of drug addicts to go along with his barely sophomoric sociological ideas

me [sweating nervously]: we're not cooked. we're NOT cooked. we are not cooked. reality [cosmically indifferent to my wishes]:

Cuomo is not inevitable. Tell everyone you know not to rank him and why. Email, text, call and talk with folks directly. We can defeat this guy.

Sort of like how Los Angeles was the only city to ever really pull off the Olympics, I feel like we’re uniquely suited as a city to host Siege Week. Keep sending troops! The place will still be ungovernable.

I love Devo and "Dare to be Stupid" is an absolute fucking banger that would 100% be on the Devo greatest hits record.

Trump sending troops to US cities isn’t fascism. Real fascism is closing down the Olive Garden during the pandemic, something he also did

I think it might be useful to do a real assessment at some point of who has the ability to shape the narrative and how it isn’t (for instance) all but a few Congressional Dems. One thing that does help shape the narrative, though: posts like this.

i personally do not think the administration is actually prepared for what happens if they are facing mass protests in every major city in the country

I am not kidding, the protestors should should show up with sleeping bags and pillows for these guys.

david zaslav looks like one of those dead bodies from five thousand years ago that they found perfectly preserved due to some weird circumstance. except alive

Did you know that if you post on Bluesky you don't see any Republican talking points when you're not on the website?

It’s also…incredibly ineffective messaging? Like when a political answers a question by saying “what we SHOULD be talking about is eggs” or whatever they just sound politician-like in a way that completely subsumes whatever they’re saying.

It makes sense when it's an obvious fake story that the right is using to shift the conversation (like the migrant caravans). But when it's the thing that everyone is talking about that's your chance to get an argument in front of people.

One of the core problems right now is that we are in a Don’t Care era. My pet example, also from sports, is the production of MLB streaming audio, which handles its ad breaks in ways that would have embarrassed me when I was a 16-year-old working at a small-town AM station. But they don’t care.

Love seeing this come from someone that McArdle thinks she's in the same league as (she is not).

megan mcardle is just mad because she was given her fake republican job back when you still needed to get good grades

The World for Sale by Javier Blas and Jack Farchy makes a credible case that commodities traders are the Illuminati. An incredibly revealing book. Odd Lots Discord book recs continue their winning streak for me.

He listened to this album and it changed his life forever

A slightly different definition of "fix" the city www.thecity.nyc/2025/06/09/c...

"To give a sense of the scale of the inefficiency, analysis we did in the Biden administration gave an example of Walmart’s blockchain usage that was up to 50 million times (not a typo) less efficient, in terms of compute, than a traditional database configuration."

the reframing of bluesky as some sort of bubble for one viewpoint conveniently ignores the fact many of us left X because our work was obviously being censored for its viewpoints. i wrote about tesla and climate and trans people and was significantly throttled. that’s why i left!

I am ranking Zohran but this is a seriously misguided take. Brannan opposes congestion pricing. He forced City of Yes to include a special carve out preventing ADUs from being built in his neighborhood. Meanwhile, Mark Levine has been steadfastly supportive of congestion pricing and pro-housing.

Honest question, did BLM protest imagery make it into Trump ads in 2024?

The city is moving incredibly fast to crack down on e-bikes and no one is doing anything about recidivist speeders even after a woman with dozens of camera-issued speed tickets wiped out a family in Brooklyn nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/06/08/b...

New York's violent crime rate was 23.0% lower than the national average, and New York's property crime rate was 27.6% lower than the national average. Andrew Cuomo can eat shit. www.vitalcitynyc.org/articles/the...

Community bankers are like beer wholesalers, you don't think about them but if they get mad about any potential legislation your congressman will never hear the end of it.
