agreed on this line of thinking! especially when the game is new to me I'd be doing this multi-hover a lot. worth trying to reduce friction there so people don't lose out on understanding your systems / lose patience

what a stacked set of years looking back! played lots of multiplayer for RS:Vegas 2, L4D, and Gears 2, but gotta give it to Gears the sound design stuck with me for sure. I can still hear the torque bow, hammer of dawn, and headshots going off

Someone else mentioned Mario and that first game is a classic example. Those first few screens tell you everything you need to know: you can interact with shiny blocks, enemies can move, environments can rise up or down. Player now knows the flow is to build their knowledge screen by screen

It's about setting the stage for how much the game expects me to learn vs it will teach. Dark Souls gives you prompts for what the buttons do, but knowing R1 does an attack prepares me very little for dealing with the combat. That starting area is telling me I gotta learn/explore a lot on my own.

love: when it teaches me how the game will be teaching me new mechanics so I can be on the lookout hate: when it's more orientation than it is fun

this thought has had me paralyzed and restart on new ideas many times. hard to overcome for sure. current mentality that's been helping me is just enjoying the learnings for small slices. an animation, a sound, even a UI. I'll need all these skills anyway to make the thing I'll be proud of.
