"Perhaps we need a Wikipedia Liberty Index. Real or threatened censorship of Wikipedia is a lagging indicator of a state's attitudes towards free press, free speech, academic freedom, and free expression in general, and a real-time indicator of active efforts at suppression."

like every simplistic theory of capital's coercive behavior and protection of its own interests is just looking unbelievably delusional

The next decade (at least) is going to be marked by more and more industries realizing the huge mistake they made by listening to silicon valley, blindly embracing tech, and abandoning established and profitable business models and practices

100%. Not entirely sure yet what the next gen of civic/govtech development looks like, but one thing for sure we need to get better about is anticipating the negative uses of a thing we’re making and how those might, when possible, be minimized. Or in some cases not making the damn thing at all.

Also, not setting that fact aside — though it might not be obvious to folks who (quite reasonably) aren’t well-versed in the specifics of government procurement, this is a lot like shutting down USAID, but for our own country.

Totally. Often with their Thiel and Thiel-worshipping crowd I find their problem analysis to be quite accurate, even insightful, but then their solutions always, always turn out to be degenerate, immoral, and cruel.

Any group that puts the word “moral” anywhere near the name Peter Thiel has already veered so far off the path they’ll never find their way back.

Like, I don't want this Dem party. There's no fucking point in winning in 2028 if you're just quietly rebuild the government and pass some nice bills - while you let the GOP obstruct you in the Senate and courts, and nobody even knows about the nice bills because of our media ecosystem.

Hsieh’s story (well-documented in a.co/d/2gi83a7) is tragic—and his delusional efforts revolved around buying friends & building a perfect utopia, not ending the American dream—but beyond those specifics the contours of both are very similar. We’ll see if the eventual endings line up, too, I guess.

Update: Might not be true! Fingers crossed. Deleted my post just in case.

Would be delighted if it wasn't true! Will remove just in case.

I've heard it from two people so far, I'm no longer there so can't confirm definitively, but given how everything else has been going would be surprised if it wasn't true.
