Let's be super clear: this is an explicit threat to do what the US govt is doing to the NIH/NSF - de-fund *currently funded projects* which this government thinks aren't worthy of the money.

Lest AoNZ think this kind of thing hasn't reached us, consider the impact of taking humanities and social sciences out of the Marsden Fund - we're yet to see final numbers but that was forecast to more than halve grants to Māori investigators.

More seriously, the fact this is a pre-Budget announcement does not fill me with optimism about the likelihood of the science system actually getting any major new funding, no matter how many times they say the word 'bold'. Would love to be wrong there!
