No rubrics? I got rubrics all the way into grad school- people are weird.

And again, not a dig at parents. I will sign Seuss again this year, I'm sure. I love my students and I'm glad to celebrate them- but you can pick a better book.

I could add more. Always. Shouting into the void that I'd love to see what others we can crowdsource for people.

10/For Every One by Jason Reynolds- not the ideal blank space for teachers to write, but the kind of message I hope my son turns to when he is scared or unsure as he makes his way through this life.
Also the gift I give to each of my graduates at the end of seniors year.

9/ I am Every Good Thing by Derrick Barnes- one of the two books I gave my own son on his graduation.
“I am worthy of success, of respect, of safety, of kindness, of happiness.”

8/ Swimmy by Leo Lionni- simply because I have to pick one. I love them all. Read them and find the one that matches your child's heart.

7/ In Every Life by Marla Frazee is another book that makes me weep. The message of live every moment would pair beautifully with notes from your child's teachers. Stunning.

6/ An A From Ms. Keller by Patricia Polacco- I'm biased I read this to my high schoolers every year, but I would seriously weep if a parent asked me to sign this for their kid.

5/ The Stuff of Stars by Marion Dane Bauer is one of my go-to book gifts. The swirling illustrations by Nana Ekua are stunning and would be a perfect gift for a grad headed off to study astronomy, science, or just a dreamer.

4/ The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson is a sweet ending that talks about courage in new beginnings. The ruler motif is cute nod to measuring up and a reminder to stay true to yourself.

3/ Journey by Aaron Becker- I could pick so many of Aaron Becker's books for this list but this one is perfect for the strong, brave young woman in your life headed out on her own. Also wordless picture book means lots of writing space!

2/ Bright Star by Yuyi Morales- I'm a little obsessed with these illustrations. An allegory for the challenges of life told through the story of a fawn. Also available in Spanish, Lucero.
"Child, you are awake!
You are alive!
You are a bright star,
Inside our hearts."

1/ All Because You Matter by Tami Charles is a love letter from parent to child. It is the message every teacher would want to share in sending to a grad.
“You were dreamed of, like a knapsack full of wishes, carried on the backs of your ancestors as they created empires, pyramids, legacies.”

I mean... it was probably the walk home in the sunshine that did it, but I also just always need a little treat.
