Google now has a "From Sources Around the Web" result for "Top 10 Tips to Optimize for AI" It looks... a bit non-sensical. But also, a lot like SEO 😅

Fun fact: when people refer to it as "SGE" and not "AI Overviews," it's often because it's AI-generated. Same is true for "E-A-T" vs. "E-E-A-T."

Interesting: this is an informational/affiliate site, but so far, it is less affected by AI Overviews cutting into traffic simply because... Google doesn't appear to be showing AI Overviews for its main traffic-driving keywords* (for now at least) (*Usually "best ____[product]")

Don’t get too excited about AI Overview & AI Mode data appearing in GSC 😅 (Yes, of course I’m happy we have *some data* as opposed to nothing at all, but:) (🧵)

Which LLMs are the most "gullible?" Over the last 24 hours, I ran a short experiment to see how easy it is to influence the answers to highly-specific questions across different AI platforms. The answers were fun & interesting - check it out. lilyray.nyc/which-ai-sea...

Imagine writing an article on your own site (or any trusted publication) and stating *so many* statistics and facts and figures without citing any sources. Must be nice.

Interesting how many people are out there making grandiose statements about how AI/LLMs/AI search works And what it takes to rank in AI Mode, etc …without any data or evidence to back it up. 🤔

How do readers feel about reading AI content? Last week I ran a poll on LinkedIn & X to see how respondents felt about reading content that they could *just tell* was written with AI. Out of 1,572 total responses, 75% claimed that they don't like reading AI content. Only 12% don't mind it. (1/3)

So if you’re the number 5 link in an AIO sidebar, you’re #1 in GSC. (When AIO ranks at the top) But if you’re #5 in AI Mode, you’re #5 in GSC. Good luck making sense of that data 😂

Unbelievable. When you type "John Deere" into Google, the link it provides in the Knowledge Panel is literally a non-existent website. Its regular organic link still works. h/t @shawnrubel.bsky.social for flagging

Just like AI Overviews, looks like AI Mode overlooks hreflang attributes. I've seen multiple examples of English content on non-US ccTLDs appearing in my AI Mode citations (searched from the US). Even when the site uses hreflang correctly. Be sure to add country selector pop-ups to your pages 😅

One of the worst GSC gaps I've seen is from this financial advice website. Interesting that in addition to clicks dropping, impressions often seem to rise simultaneously. (Multiple mentions in AIO and search =/= more clicks)

Not even Google is safe from Reddit's shenanigans 😆

AI Mode is getting better at citing websites (when you ask for it), but it will also randomly say that certain brands/websites are not in the search results. They are.

This is awesome!

Because Google AI Mode links to Google Business Profiles and not official websites (unless you ask directly), it often leads to AI Mode selecting the wrong GBP. Like here - "Spot" was recommended as a good pet insurance company, but AI Mode shows the GBP for a weed dispensary.

For a good time, ask ChatGPT to end the conversation in voice mode 😂

My bf just Googled “90s B list actors” and got this result… what??? 🤦🏽‍♀️

“Healthier and more useful?” 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ Check it out: www.bbc.com/future/artic...

I’m not a lawyer but this feels a bit like it should be illegal, to me. arstechnica.com/ai/2025/06/g...

RIP ClaimReview, that was fun to work on for a fact checking site once (until it ruined our CTR and ate our traffic, obviously)

Yo #SMX - if you’re here at 4:30 come to “networking” the expo hall, I will be DJing 🎧 #smxadvanced

The good news: your business is mentioned in AI Mode Bad news: it looks like this

Personal context is a function of vector embeddings - you’d need to create different users to monitor the different types of results they would see, based on personalization We need to create as many candidate passages to be used as possible - Mike King #smxadvanced

AI Overviews also uses a query fan-out technique (according to Google’s patent) AIO and AI Mode generate up to 9 synthetic queries to provide a deeper answer to the user’s query - Mike King #smxadvanced

“If you’re a publisher, I don’t have any good news for you. Because Google is starting to show AI Overviews for news results too. You need to diversify your traffic.” - Mike King #SMXAdvanced

Patrick Stox from @ahrefs.bsky.social confirms that non-Google Labs AI Mode data is now flowing into GSC 🥳 (Prepare to be entirely underwhelmed!! 😅)

For ~15 years, @wilreynolds.bsky.social has been my favorite speaker because his message is consistent: - be authentic in your marketing - you can win with SEO but lose with humans - it is not a strategy to copy what everyone else did #SMXAdvanced

Good vibes in Boston #smx

So Google had to employ a fancy math problem to solve queries like “does water freeze at 26 degrees” (which it was previously getting wrong) Unfortunately… this fix doesn’t always work either 😅

Proud mama 😂

Me: “best pet insurance” Google AI Mode: try “Figo”! The best gelato in Little Italy.

Considering making a video where I go visit all the (wrong) businesses recommended to me by AI Mode Like the random ATM in the hood of Brooklyn yesterday when I asked about “best insurance companies” ☠️

I had a party at my place over the weekend. A few friends (not SEOs) started a conversation about how they “hate the new Google” and “wish the AI would go away” and “want to be able to click around Google” on their own. Thought that was very interesting 👀👀
