The pacing felt a bit off -- probably a consequence of constantly switching between narratives -- but the payoff of getting to know Zelu from 3 different angles was definitely worth it + I love nested stories and this definitely scratched that itch

It's inspired by a couple of Ken Liu short stories (highly recommend). "The Gods Will Not Be Chained" and "Staying Behind"-- there might be some others I can't think of right now.
Yeah, they're great too but the show really just took those core ideas and ran a f*cking marathon

Started the sequel today. I can already tell from the prelude that I'm gonna love the way she writes aliens

+Mahit's complex love-hate relatioship with the all-consuming, self-projecting/replicating empire is weirdly relatable to me as a European who mainly studies contemporary US literature

Now that I've had some time to sit with it, here's some well deserved praise:
Probably my favorite read of the year so far. Such a great character study with some really well-worked stylizations for Mahit's unique neurosituations

What if you set up a tiny hall of mirrors? Or will the cat know?

I get that. Reflecting while reading is a good skill to have, though -- be proud of it.
If I just have to get through sth for uni I've found that mixed media reading really helps -- when the audio/physical book gets too tiring (or I too ponderous) I just switch from one to the other

It's either Parable of the Sower, Pratchett's Nation, Hyperion (the first novel NOT the series), or Dandelion Dynasty
In terms of stuff I think you'd have a great time covering, I agree with the comment recommending Locked Tomb. Solid and/or weird plots + fun characters + when it hits it goes hard

This goes for all forms of genre-savviness. I'm just as lost when people expect me to pick up on stuff in their stuff

a bunch of www.nathanburtondesign.com 's other covers have that cool old timey movie poster aesthetic too. @isawiitch.bsky.social has a great fan cover for Radiance btw: www.instagram.com/p/Ce6YvYZJzN...

Day 3 -- Hyperion
Simmons is problematic af -- buy second-hand and don't read the sequels. They do their very best to ruin a masterpiece
