i think one of the reasons Tressie McMillan Cottom is one of the sages of our time is her breakdown of how the left is not immune to any of these purity politics

Yeah i have to laugh about the brouhaha around it. Both better and worse than I expected. The timing of its release is fairly weird and far more relevant to SF or NYC politics than federal

I love so much of her takes but her unpacking of white beauty standards is just legendary. She’s made me insufferable talking to my friends about tanning/bleaching and trad wives.

Tressie got me to start lifting, that’s how influential she is

I’ve been really enjoying Money with Katie (and Diabolical Lies), but it’s kind of nuts how everything Tressie McMillan Cottom touches is gold

same! kind of adore that about Oakland politics.

Roberts dreams of fostering elite respect and legitimacy for his SCOTUS but is so blinded by his own grievances. I mean it would be hilariously sad if they weren't constantly stripping away rights from people

As someone in that last lecture, yep! Reich was really savvy all semester in encouraging passion and dissuading despair.

tbh i find it much easier to assess someone's affiliations by asking their opinion on Bari Weiss and/or what Jewish publication they mostly read.

absolutely! i find it amusing watching my Conservative sis-in-law be absolutely befuddled by the fairly traditional Reform synagogue I belong to ... meanwhile her parents are sending me Central Synagogue sermons and posting nonstop about Bibi/No Kings

i was almost relieved to hear his neocon side come out about Iran

I'd also say as someone who reads Responsa for fun- the Reform movement balances its Enlightenment/Liberalism principles while also still understanding the limits of halakha. It's not 'Anything Goes' Judaism.

I think the Reform definition is evolving, many places absorbing Conservative's position, others becoming even more progressive (I think of the unaffiliated movement like Kolot Chayeinu, Ohabei Shalom). It's why 'synagogue shopping' is such a thing!

Which means a baby born in New York to undocumented parents will be a citizen. But a baby born to undocumented parents in Kentucky will not be a citizen. This is madness.

We see Beta Colony’s darker sides from Cordelia all the way in Shards of Honor!! This is a future where compelled confessions are normal, eugenics are obvious, therapy is a torture device.

Right wing Jews tend to be either Modern Orthodox or more likely, secular! Stephen Miller was Bar Mitzvahed in a Reform synagogue … doubt he likes the key beliefs of the URJ too much

The Conservative movement is becoming more niche, but to me is very associated with the Jewish suburban enclave crowd. Their politics tend to be “lib wine mom” meets Bill Kristol’s foreign policy. I’m being snarky but that movement tends to be reliably centrist dems.

As you say, the Conservative process varies a lot. My brother went through that, I did Reform, but I found that the audience tends to be a much heavier mix of marriage, some Zera Yisrael (like ourselves), then some a small religious %

i've been reading the Vorkosigan Saga and my god does it point to the inevitability of 'scientific rationalism' creating a eugenic police state (terrific and entertaining series when the implications aren't dark as hell)

this confluence is so obvious and yet so pleasing.

Right? I also find it so telling when people criticize Orthodox Jews for 'cheating' with eruv, shabbat lamps/elevators, etc.

the ability for 'spiritual incongruence' to exist in Judaism is one of its biggest strengths. A religious/philosophical practice rooted in questioning and accepting the mystery. it is a stunning philosophy.

I stand by the beit din being one of the most philosophically fulfilling conversations of my life for that reason! It made grad school seminars seem like a cake walk.

every strand of New Atheism I've witnessed has always viewed Judaism as 'weirder Christianity' and ignores the incredible history of Judaism and Atheism (to its detriment)

arguing against free fares is firmly in the 'correct policy but terrible politics' quadrant

yeah absolutely! to use that metaphor, I find Sekiro really satisfying because it's like using the pedal-less bikes to learn to balance ... the posture mechanic is so cool

this is such a ridiculous troll, WHO is this mythical customer craving the smallest tv remote? Is the most important consumer an ipod shuffle owner?

I recently had some friends bemoan the new speeding cameras and SF and I'm so confused why they're apparently driving 10% over the speed limit

All of this panic reminds me of the 2021 “SF isn’t safe” brain rot. It’s just commentators and poasters working people into a frenzy that is completely outside of reality!!!

There’s so much to say on this but I’m left with complete disgust and contempt. How dare these people tokenize us for their politics. How dare they put forth someone so unaligned with Jewish principles as our “only hope”. How dare they.

One of the many awful parts of Greenblatt’s governance of the ADL and other similar Jewish institutions is how we’ve allowed fear to metastasize and pursue awful politics on its behalf
