In addition to the absolutely terrible international news today, my mom had a stroke this evening. My siblings are with her at the hospital in Virginia. Depending on what’s needed and their work schedules, I’ll likely be flying out. I want to scream.

Solid twist ending from M. Gessen's column in the NYT today: "The reason you should care about this is not that it could happen to you but that it is already happening to others.” gift link [ […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Tonight, I'll go home and sleep in my bed. I have a lawyer, I'll get due process. But Edgardo, whose arm was ripped from mine by ICE agents, has none of those things. That's why I'll keep coming back to court, week after week, to make sure that people's rights are protected.

Anyone can become disabled at any time. It’s one of the few minority groups you can always join. Even if you do everything “right”. Even if you’re young and healthy. Even if you “try hard” It’s not a moral failing. It’s a part of life. Engage in disability justice.

If Pavel is right then Apple, the very company that popularized the phrase user experience (if I’m not mistaken), appears to have lost the plot. I really hope not.

Worth considering that one reason Bluesky doesn't always feel super fun is that current events are relentlessly horrifying and bad

As a Gen X-coded elder Millennial (y'all always forget to mention Gen X), this whole thread is very on point for me. Raised by Usenet, Prodigy message boards, & AOL chat rooms. Came of age on ICQ, more Usenet, & LiveJournal. Give me non-algorithmic chronological ordering or expect my snark.

If you live in LA, please post videos and photos of reality as much as you can because the Fox News Cinematic Universe is working hard to sell this dystopian fiction.

A while back, a group of Amazon workers wrote an open letter to the company, and one Amazon software engineer wrote that Amazon Ring was “not compatible with a free society.” Anyway, I think about that from time to time.

This is the spirit of Los Angeles. This is California. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. #FreeDavidEndRaids

Created by another person I’ve worked with before (found here at @jacobharr.is) who does excellent work (and who has an ethical core, in case that’s something that’s appealing to you). www.linkedin.com/posts/jacob-...

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

FYI: people've been on Insurrection Act watch since before Easter. Civilian PDs/mystery agents are militarily outfitted and these completely alegal kidnappings are so far from due process & constitutional norms that only the highest levels of blanket authoritarianism are left. Brace. Don't panic.

Man, I’m such a nerd. 😛 This is incredibly hilarious to me. www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/i-s... I, Saruman, Have Ended My Alliance with the Dark Lord Sauron - McSweeney’s Internet Tendency

Day 3 of Pride Month. Today we honor 𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗚 𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟, a fearless organizer who turned the rage of Stonewall into action. In 1970, he helped launch the first Pride March in NYC, sparking a global movement. #PrideMonth #LGBTQHistory 🧵

We have some news to share with you. 🥄 Today we took legal action to challenge our termination, filing an appeal with the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board. We did this because we believe the elimination of 18F violated safeguards that exist to protect a nonpartisan civil service.

I've decided I abhor the compliment of calling someone a super hero. 1. It absolves the speaker from stepping up and supporting the person who appears to be going above and beyond 2. It ignores that many "superheroes" are sacrificing their wellbeing to do the work of multiple people

When you wear a mask, you tell disabled and vulnerable people that their lives matter. That you don’t see them as expendable You tell your others that you value community care You tell the government that you know Covid isn’t over & you want better from public health It’s a symbol of resistance

Heart breaking story and a wake up call for those who think Covid is "just a cold": youtu.be/vqeIeIcDHD0?... #CovidIsAirborne #CleanAir #CovidisnotOver
