I found a letter to the Editor of the Tauranga Record from 9 Nov 1867 in which Colonel Harington, officer in charge of the 1st Waikato Militia is lambasted for leading a campaign against a peaceful settlement of the hapū of Pirirakau. Link here: paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/T...

I don't understand the aversion to teaching the politics of your field while you teach it.

I got to take advantage of being in North America by attending a live show for a YouTuber I like: CJ the X. We got to witness a live performance of a video essay, with Q+A. I went because I had a feeling he would have things to say that would relate to my work and I was not disappointed.

Whenever I get into a debate with a staunch coloniser the argument always falls into one of two camps: 1. Actually the natives are better off because we took their land Or if they get desperate, they try 2. We conquered them fair and square

BIRD PROTOCOL. Take a bird, leave a bird. 🪶 #birds

Someone needs to make a thing for Google docs etc that will allow students to prove they wrote their assignments themselves

Has anyone used the new NZ North region azure data center? I think it opened in December 2024, so it’s a few months old now.

The only way the US can compete with China in manufacturing without taking multiple generations is if they tank labour costs in their own borders by manufacturing an economic collapse that will spike the demand for low wage jobs. Indeed, it seems that’s exactly what they’re doing.

ok so!!! something I found really interesting after talking to Korean protesters was... well, it was actually me realizing something about protest in the US: protest is trapped in an unwinnable spiral about "peaceful" versus "violent" protest, and even people who know it's dumb can't break free

I make things so complicated for myself sometimes. For example, I agreed to give a talk next week for a lab mate. She wants an abstract for the talk and I’m thinking “how do I make this talk sound interesting enough to the right people and also boring for the wrong people?”

I just recently moved my Zotero library (think: “personal academic paper library”) to my personal PC which is acting as a web server. Now, not only do I not have to pay Zotero money for cloud hosting, I also have the peace of mind of knowing my reading list is on my own hardware.

I am happy to announce that the Kakeya set conjecture, one of the most sought after open problems in geometric measure theory, has now been proven (in three dimensions) by Hong Wang and Joshua Zahl! arxiv.org/abs/2502.17655 I discuss some ideas of the proof at terrytao.wordpress.com/2025/02/25/t...

I bought these two bunnies for my half Japanese niece and nephew in Tokyo and they’re so cute

I just spent a week in Japan visiting friends, drinking tea and writing furiously for the next leg of my trip, Honolulu for ICLDC 2025

If you have to watch only one performance from Matatini 2025, Te Kuru Marutea won the people’s choice award and is an excellent choice youtu.be/jLTwgl8_2H8?...
