I'm stopping my investigation here, although one of these days I may go digging around further for more letters from this person or perhaps other like them.

There's a street named after Harington and someone compiled a history about him here, with not much mention about the war: paekoroki.tauranga.govt.nz/nodes/view/6... Pirirakau is still a hapū in Tauranga with an incorporated Tribal Authority, hapū management plan etc.

Reading this letter made me miss the art of the unsubtle public takedown. I took many other screenshots than just these. He starts with a whole bit on how Col. Harington will accuse him of being ineloquent only to dish out this tirade. I wish we knew who wrote this. The letter is signed "Sir &c".

Lastly: "What is the result of the public expenditure and loss of life caused by this inglorious war? The public must know we have gained nothing. The Maoris have re-occupied, and are planting on the scenes we infringed upon."

Another: "What good has been effected by the late war commencing in January last? Was it to expel the natives, and give security to the intended settlers? No. We had no reason to fight. We were in fault to fight ... The natives were quiet. Their apathy was great and favourable to our settlement."

The author of the article is anonymous, and drops various bangers such as "I say, without doubt, or delusive argument, that the campaign of Colonel Harington against the Pirirakaus was the ruin and demolition of the military settlement of Tauranga."

Many people working in Artificial Intelligence believe on some level that they are working on the most impactful thing for society since the Manhattan Project. Does the author of the article think *that* was an apolitical venture?

When I teach a class I like to think that I am preparing people to make a difference in the world in some way or another and to the extent that anybody is capable of doing that there is always politics involved. The point is to be intentional about the change you are making, rather than ignorant.

On some level I have more respect for point 2 over 1 because it’s honest. It’s like saying “yeah, we’re the bad guy”. What gets me isn’t that they wanna be the bad guy. It’s that they want to be the bad guy and at the same time they want to be seen as the good guy. You can’t have it both ways.
comment in response to post
The problem with 2 is that if you believe that the land was taken by force then it was indeed taken unlawfully and Indigenous Peoples, who are still here, have every right to resist colonial rule and seek out their own independence.
comment in response to post
The problem with 1 is there is so much evidence to the contrary, be it in terms of socio-economics, health etc. When you study the history you learn that Indigenous peoples were far more independent, enterprising and willing to do business on equal terms with the settlers than people today assume.

Sure maybe someone else logged in your account and wrote it but you can at least rule out that you didn’t copy paste from ChatGPT or whatever

The logic appears to be “Those low wage countries are taking our jobs, if only we were a low wage economy”. Sound logic for a billionaire business owner, not so sound for the working class whose living standards are about to drop through the floor.

Western governments and institutions have in-built mechanisms to prevent the influence of socialism and communism from taking hold but they have no such in-built resistance to fascism

I can back it up to my laptop. If my house burns down with both in it and it’s lost forever I’ll have more important concerns than my reading list.

It’s quite nice of the Zotero team to support self hosting as an option. You have to set up the server yourself and then point Zotero to it and the client will work just like usual on any device. I have considered documenting how I did it, I only just got it working yesterday after an hour or so.

Incidentally this is also why I generally don’t accept podcast interviews. Once I’ve published (soon) I can talk about those projects but before then I should really keep my work and ideas to myself.

I’m just running it from my regular desktop PC. Zotero really has zero hardware requirements besides storage. I already leave my PC on 24/7 because I use it as a media server so this is just an extra job for it to do at no extra cost.

It was easy to do this in the end, so at some point I plan to do the same to remove my dependency on Google drive and other cloud hosted things. I’ve already got my own media server, and it’s been pretty great. All you need is a PC you don’t mind leaving on all the time, and a static IP or similar.

The idea that living costs aren't too high, we're just buying the "expensive food" is gaslighting. Living costs are being allowed to rise and rise and it's always the individual who is told to live within their means and never the companies whose profits are higher than ever.

Act usually goes up if National is going down. They really shouldn’t be at 10%, the only reason they are is because Luxon is so unpopular in general.
