I got my first Novavax at Costco, but my local Costco stopped carrying them after this winter.

"The dosage/timing is either 50mg diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or promethazine 15 minutes before vaccination OR 20mg cetirizine or loratidine 2-3 hours before vaccination."

"One study even found a small (but not statistically significant) *increase* in both antibody response and VE over time, possibly because the byproducts of mast cell degranulation can suppress immune response, but it wasn't statistically significant."

"If you've had at least one dose and know you don't have an anaphylactic reaction, it's okay. Multiple studies have been done on people who require antihistamines to be safely vaccinated and there is no reduction in antibody response or vaccine effectiveness."

From @rahaeli (who appears to be blocked by your account): "The only risk to prophylactic antihistamines is if it's your first dose ever (there's a small chance it can mask a severe allergic reaction)."

Thank you so much, @rahaeli.bsky.social! I came across your resources right before we got our spring boosters (which were all mRNA) and found the information very helpful.

Kids are eligible starting at age 9. Adults are eligible through age 45 (although you can pay out of pocket for it if you're older). My older kid and I both have one shot remaining in our respective HPV series and I hope to get my younger kid theirs after they turn 9 in the fall.

It doesn't seem to! It mitigates the mast cell reaction to the spike protein - it doesn't affect how the vaccine works. @rahaeli.bsky.social has compiled a lot of resources and research around it

Taking an antihistamine before mRNA vaccines also helps reduce side effects, according to research.

I was not able to find Novavax anywhere in CT after getting it in the previous spring and the last two falls. I ended up going with Moderna for my spring booster, which resulted in a (not unexpected) energy crash. Not something I experienced with Novavax.

The assault on vaccines since January is awful, but the problems with Novavax availability precede that. Pharmacists I've talked to said they didn't reorder after fall/winter because of low demand for Novavax (people aren't aware of it as an option or alternative) and then what they had expired.

I really appreciate this take. My partner is an only child whose only stipulation was "more than 1 kid." I am the eldest of 9, and always wanted 3 children (much more manageable). After 2 gestational diabetes pregnancies and half a decade of sleeplessness, I realized a 3rd pregnancy wasn't for me.

I stayed on Twitter for way longer than most, mostly because I mostly read and rarely post (and so rarely get replies) and curate my follows carefully. By mid/late 2024, Bluesky still wasn't as lively as Twitter, but I gradually spent more time there. Now I visit Twitter only for specific folks.

I have one dose left in the HPV series, scheduled for August. I planned to get it done before eligibility closes after age 45 (and moved it up this year for obvious reasons). My older child is also midway through their HPV series.

When ours got stolen, the police told us to come pick it up at a service center the next town over. It was thoroughly trashed. When we checked the trunk and spare tire well, there was a (fake) gun in it that the police had not even seen. They had to come back to get it.

Age of child? Simple sandwiches like peanut butter and jelly, turkey and cheese, or chocolate sunflower butter are staples. For almost any age, you can do a "snacking plate" with things like hummus, cheese, small pieces of cold cuts or pepperoni, crackers, and cut up fruit or veggies.

So hard. It took me a whole summer to wean off one daily cup. Moving to half-caf was a start. Once I let go that last half cup of caffeinated coffee it took almost 2 weeks of fogginess before things cleared.

The CDC list of underlying conditions that are linked to severe COVID (thankfully still publicly accessible) includes many common conditions including asthma, depression, and smoking. All of my immediate family members are covered by at least one condition on the list: www.cdc.gov/covid/hcp/cl...

We just visited some tide pools and inter-tidal beaches and there were a LOT of crabs of different kinds. Maybe blue and green plates for two different types of common crabs?

I also have been searching (including on Facebook) and have not found anything credible. Enjoying it as a concept is one thing; sharing it as fact is quite another.

I like public transit with young kids because it generally gets you pretty close to where you need to be in an airport - and it's cheaper.

Sounds like you're well-prepared! Maybe think about a simple scavenger hunt to make the bus/train/transit ride an adventure (things to look for out the window, etc.). And of course snacks ;)

I have done it in the U.S. (a few years ago at this point). My tips are a) a toddler carrier like Ergo or Kinderpack so you can carry them and keep hands free for fare/luggage (obviously this depends on toddler age/size and your back comfort) b) a small foldable hand cart to strap the car seats to.

Our greyhound was diagnosed with abdominal tumors when we had a toddler. Surgery was one option, but had a long recovery period and no guarantees. We made the difficult decision to put him down for his quality of life. He wasn't even 10. I wish we had more time with him, but it was the best choice.

I didn't recognize I had postpartum anxiety for years after I had my first. And somehow I didn't think it was a problem that I wouldn't allow *anyone* to watch my child until they were well into toddlerhood.

It's so variable. It's both very transmissible and there are many factors affecting whether you get it. We have had it in our household twice and both times one of us never got it (we masked, ran air purifiers, etc.). 25-50% of people who get it may not ever show symptoms (per recent research).

I am on a similar timeline. I got a job at a non-profit funded by federal grants in 2005 and my spouse entered teaching a year later. We stayed employed and accumulated savings (even with public service jobs) through that recession and ultimately qualified for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
