Never take seriously those who ridicule low income people for having a smartphone or laptop. “If they’re so poor how did they buy an iPhone???” Because they’re trying to escape poverty, not the 1700s, genius. If you think basic tech access is unnecessary or a luxury, survive a month without it.

This Archie Bland piece is such a thing. Beautifully written, heartfelt, triumphant. He's on Bluesky but not active. He should know this is a lovely masterpiece. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

I know he's younger than the previous pontiff, but even so, this is pretty impressive stuff given the limited time he'll have had in nets recently.

This is great. A criticism of wealth taxes is that they will spur billionaires to flee the taxing country. But that just means we need a global approach to taxing billionaires. Concentrated wealth and stark inequality is a global crisis. We should look for global solutions.

☀️It’s been an exceptionally sunny & dry spring – what role is climate change playing? Dr Clair Barnes, an Imperial College climate scientist, explains the shifts in spring weather. And Colin Chappell, a farmer, lays out how these changes are impacting UK agriculture.

Counterpoint: Jailing pogrom enthusiasts and instigators for an exemplary length of time is a very good thing

“Brexit means we can make our own agreements with the EU, as we pick and choose!” - UK chooses to make agreement with EU on a handful of issues. “Brexit Betrayed!”

Just saw this and found it rather appropriate for me

It is to the lasting shame of British politics that this man was prime minister for three years.

If you have school-age children, push them towards studying French and Negotiation at university. Job for life.

I've done 91 clubs this season, deliberately leaving Forest until last because you have to end up at home. The final game - which in August I longed to be meaningless - will decide which European competition we play in for the first time in 30 years. I think that's pretty cool.

Really beautiful piece of writing

Once again left wondering why all these blokes in the Eurovision audience left their wives at home. The ladies would really enjoy it, lads - give them a treat next year!

@stileantico.co.uk celebrated their 20th Anniversary at Wigmore Hall last night 🎉 As part of the festivities, they signed a photo to be added to our backstage gallery - here they are with John Gilhooly on stage 💫

this is a bit of an adjacent point but I do think "small talk" should be thought of as a skill, and something that becomes more enjoyable once you've practiced it a bit; reckon few people just love it from the off, there's got to be some effort at the start but it then becomes genuinely rewarding

It’s going to be a stressful summer for anyone who’s hidden a body in a reservoir.

My favorite gallery in the world the Courtauld on the strand omg

Central Bradford is also just a *much* nicer place to be now than it was ten years ago. Got a good book festival now, the park’s been regenerated, the pit is gone…so why’s it a problem if 50% of people were born overseas precisely?

Aldershot end 99-year Wembley wait with sunshine and champagne showers

“The concept of race has little utility as a biological taxonomy. But it is enormously important socially & culturally. Social constructs are how the world works: money & time are both socially constructed too.” - @adamrutherford.bsky.social www.bbc.com/future/artic...

On May 11, 1950, while working on the Rawlins National Bank in Wyoming, a construction crew unearthed a whiskey barrel that contained a human skeleton with its skull cap sawed off & an odd pair of shoes. Dr. Lillian Heath, now in her 80s, was asked if she knew anything about it...🧵

6 minutes and 47 seconds of complete joy.

Agree with this entirely.

Just finished my new screenplay 🎥

One of the strangest ironies of the last ten years has been watching Britain immersing itself as deeply as ever in memories of WW2 while proudly turning its back on the project that emerged from it.

Apparently today is #NationalPackagingDay and it reminds us of that day we opened a book and found this paper bag and it was like we'd travelled back in time.

My photo of the Red Arrows Commemorative VE Day flyover London. You're welcome.

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

The world they worked so hard to build is being destroyed by people who claim their legacy. We must take it back.
