Right now you can use chatgpt for free, because hyped up investors are footing the bill for their operational costs. And right now even paid users are costing the company money. If the average person had to pay the true price for it, it may well lose its appeal

There is one way it could go away, and i think that's if the lack of new data results in a ceiling for model performance, or full on model collapse. The bubble pops, the venture capital money dries up, and all these AI startups suddenly can't keep up with the cost of their own product
