That is how elections work, yes. Name recognition is all most people go on. When your influence is next to nill, ignorance becomes rational.

There is a way to dissent from that norm that isn't a far-right plot for tyranny. In fact, if we want an actual democracy, we really should. #Sortition www.bostonreview.net/articles/the...

Must democratize the Court—and the entire government—through sortition. My design for such a new system here: drpaulzeitz.substack.com/cp/147782222

Just one flaw in this masterpiece: the Martian Assembly never adopted sortition to achieve true democracy, like their Athenian predecessors!

This is brilliant: billionaire-proofing social media. @assembleamerica.org is working on something similar: billionaire-proofing democracy through Citizens' Assemblies. Same principle: take power from the ultra-wealthy and give it directly to everyday people. Being done in places like Ireland.

Whether Trump is successful or not, the American system--with the exception of the jury--is not a democracy. But there is a way it could be: sortition. #Sortition #DemocracyByAssembly #DxA #CitizensAssembly www.bostonreview.net/articles/the...

Let’s make these forgotten women eligible and not a disgraced gambler. open.substack.com/pub/nickcocc...

In the meantime, there is not a single woman player inductee in the Hall, despite thousands of professional women players, both in the 1940s and later. Yet there are male managers and umpires in the Hall who never played themselves. Think about that.
comment in response to post
But if the MLB is serious about deterring the kind of behavior Rose engaged in and the corrosive value it has, it should not clear the way for his posthumous induction. What kind of message does that send? That it doesn’t matter in the end—we’ll induct you eventually?
comment in response to post
Induction into the shrine is an honor, not a right. Even if you have the best stats, it doesn’t entitle you to be inducted, because the Hall is meant to honor excellence in all aspects of a player’s career. Obviously all the inductees are imperfect, and there are even some SOBs among them.
comment in response to post
Rose and his contributions to the game are in amply covered in the exhibition. So he is already in the Hall. What he doesn’t have is a gold-leaf plaque glorifying him in the shrine. This is how it should be. Rose was banned from the shrine during his life because of his disgraceful behavior.
comment in response to post
The HoF has 2 parts: exhibitions detailing the history of baseball; and a shrine with several hundred plaques of the inductees. The exhibitions have tons of memorabilia, images, stories, and facts about many players who are not inductees in the shrine.

I’m a native of Cooperstown and actually worked in the Hall of Fame in high school. I even gave a tour once to members of the Big Red Machine. And I can attest that Pete Rose is already in the Hall. What do I mean?
