One of the first computer programs I wrote* for myself was to draw spirographs 😊 I could fiddle with the parameters and come up with different shape, while the computer did the actual drawing—very slowly! (*I think from pseudocode I saw somewhere like in an old edition of Computer Recreations.)

In particular, at the time I couldn’t find a way to get over the Swiss Alps from Austria down into France (hoping to then cycle south to Spain and Morocco). I didn’t fancy taking a loaded touring rig through the mountains with snow already coming in.

I don’t know how Denmark do their thing; will have a peek later. (I do have Danish relatives, though!) Speaking of Denmark, there’s this take on the retirement age / state pension issues (short version seems to be that you have to look at it in context, not cherry-pick) - bsky.app/profile/musi...

Another reminder to ACT that we have regulations to protect consumers – as if they’re listening, though……

I find reading the CEO’s feed to be revealing. Might add some thoughts on that later.

Nothing says they’re acting like agitated thugs as shooting at someone with their back turned to them, slowly walking away, eh? 😞

Which episode is that? (Not sure I want to watch all 5 seasons, but I could jump to the one episode!)

The top of that road can catch it! 😊 FWIW - no snow in Christchurch, but there might be some on Canterbury foothills, and perhaps higher parts of Bank Peninsula. It rarely snows on the flat in Christchurch, and when it does it’s A BIG DEAL 😀

(cont’d) today is present opening day. You can peek into the action on the hashtag #MWSecretSantaAoNZ If you’re scrolling under 'Latest', via a web browser at least, you might to to persist a bit as Bluesky seems to struggle with lengthy Latest feeds! 2/2

Thanks. Very confusing. I thought I’d reposted that, and somehow pasted the link from the wrong tab in when I went to do my own post for the second. Will delete in a bit. Have put up a new post.

Google bought out Altavista, & for a while kept it running. When they canned it I felt we’d lost something, the ability to truly drive the search as we’d specified. It’s harder. For "popular" requests "smarter" approaches are better, but for specific things you could better wield it as a tool. 2/2

Thanks. I’ve seen a few posts from him over the way on these…… IIRC an earlier book he wrote on the genome was criticised, too.

Reminds of reading in that opening sentence of Ridley’s 'paper' “there is growing realization that the source might be the Wuhan Institute of Virology”, and immediately thinking, WHO?—a few errant souls aside virtually no-one in “virology, Infectious diseases, epidemiology, and public health fields”
