#NZpol “[…] Minister Shane Jones said the decline in gas reserves was a "stark reminder" of why the Government was seeking greater investment in exploration and production.” => Fail 😞 Correct answer is step up on putting (cleaner) alternatives in place.

Nice to spend time scrolling something that isn’t doom 😊 In Aotearoa New Zealand we had a thing called Secret Santa organised on Twitter, in its pre-X days, a nationwide, volunteer-run gifting of presents. Participant Santa look for clues about their Santee online. It’s now on Bluesky, and 1/2

Unsurprisingly, the results were spectacularly bad.

🗡️* “stabbed to death in the streets of Cheapside” - Might be a fun weekend read for some 😊 arstechnica.com/science/2025... —— *I would use 🔪 but this is a medieval murder 😀

If you were to make Google’s search *index*, the underlying database of "stuff out there", accessible to other search platforms, I have to admit I’d love to see an old-fashioned Altavista-style interface option among the offerings. The old librarian-style driven-just-by-a-form search. 1/2

30 years of satellite tracking data, 12,794 animals from 111 species - the results reveal underwater “highways” where megafauna crisscross the global ocean theconversation.com/we-tracked-1...

Anyone know anyone on here who could maybe help with a cover image in the next week? Based on a chemical/material structure with a bit of graphic design? (For a prof fee obvs)

By the way, because this is hybrid, it's also open to attendees from other countries. If the UK timezone is manageable for you, and you want to learn about science writing/journalism, feel free to sign up!

#NZ science / government policy As I’ve tried saying before, the short-term thinking the current government has on science is not the win they think it is 1/n www.rnz.co.nz/news/thedeta...

I remember those flying toasters 😀 Bring back the whimsy! (Feel free to show the whimsical things on your device. Mine is out-of-the-box bland 😑)

#NZpol Useful on the use of AI on the RSB ⬇️ Personally, I would like to see a number of these voluminous submissions collected and tested against a variety of approaches as a study.* I wouldn’t trust what Seymour’s lot does with it. To be polite, he and his lot have too much of a stake in it.**

#NZ beer 🍺 fans, and those with hearing loss I’ve had a few of his at Biochem Happy Hour 😀 Mum also spent hours "speech training" me. I’ve photographs of us at the kitchen table at it. Richard will have a larger hearing loss than mine, but it’s the same tools needed to manage “in a hearing world”.

Schadenfeed - we have the word of the year right here!

Sometimes this is a good solution to all the world’s problems. Bury your snoot in your paw

#NZ High rates of whooping cough (pertusssis) in Bay of Plenty, Lakes districts; one in ten patients ending up in hospital - Dr Danny de Lore: “children most at risk were those living in communities where the immunisation rates were low” - Vaccination details at the end of the article. Please do!

🖥️🧬 Lifting to the genomics/bioinformatics feed Important to think about the negative results here ⬇️

Hear hear!

#NZpol re Shane Jones’ insistence we "need" to drill, etc –

#NZ If you’re travelling on east coast north to Kiakoura, expect to be redirected to take the Mt Lyford road - Best wishes to the pedestrian, and anyone else affected 🤞 www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

I’d "love" to know the story behind this 😔 It may or may not be related, but it reminds me of ACT’s recent promotion of cuts to Māori-oriented and "woke", etc., science funding on other social media.
