Both fair points - in my head 5'7" is tiny but then I found out Messi is 5'7" so now it feels irrelevant 😂

No concerns over Fofana's height? Only 5 ft 7!

The league cup semis are in Jan and we struggled in those games while still in a title race. We have done well to make the UCL semis (hopefully final!) but the league form has dipped.
Agree on City squad value point, hopefully we can take another step with some signings this summer.

Well City won the treble, and repeatedly won domestic cups alongside league wins. Our lack of FA Cup action since we won it is further evidence that we don't currently do as well as we should challenging on multiple fronts.

Listen I'm not criticising for losing that Villa game, which as you rightly point out was a blip, but it did come while shuffling the pack for the UCL. Not necessarily on Arteta specifically, or a mental thing, but we do need to be better at juggling games. Might come with more squad building.

I can sort of see what he means, we might've made the quarters last year but that week derailed both competitions (with the Villa loss and obviously going out to Bayern) and this year, the UCL run has definitely affected our league form.

I believe it's August 31st - you need to be 15 by that date or you can't play in that PL season.

Yeah we'd probably have had to take a hit on fee, certainly would be making a loss compared to what we paid.
Apologies if I've missed it, but thoughts on how we line up until Martinelli/Saka get back?

Maybe I'm misremembering the summer, but was he injured? I thought he'd had a pre season? I'm not sure why he wouldn't have been a saleable asset, but one thing is for sure - he isn't now!!

I think going into the summer, most of us wanted/expected to see Zinchenko, Tomiyasu and Jesus off the wage bill, all of which have an injury history which puts a strain on the squad.
Agree on midfield - but if Kai was the fallback, relying on Jesus to stay fit at 9 was poor planning IMO.

Definitely and it can't be denied we have had bad luck with injuries.
I think a point probably not made enough is that actually, sales were as much a part of it. If we move on some people we probably should've, there's more scope to "make a mistake" when buying a forward.

Potentially poor examples but just gave them off the back of who had been discussed in Jan. My point is we can't look back on the summer and limit options to Sesko/Williams + who actually moved, as if they were the only options. It's the summer, a lot more flexible than Jan.

I think this probably doesn't take into account the players that didn't move, that Arsenal didn't go for. Could we have got an Mbeumo/Semenyo etc out of their club if we'd tried? Probably.

You are right if we take that chance the game is different. I do think we probably should've just shut it down for an hour and made it a 30 minute game though.
I hate the league cup with the fire of 1000 suns and wish we treated it like Wenger used to (at least until the final, not the semi).

It's always awful. Said before the draw for the semis it would be the worst one for us.
Thank god we don't have to go there again all season.

Good point - pretty convinced he is our new right forward with Nypan maybe coming into the 8?

MLS maybe, harder for Nwaneri

It's mad - I think he will get one ahead of City but I wouldn't be surprised either way to be honest. Poor guy I'm tired just watching him 😂

Agreed on both.
I feel maybe Mikel will want at least one of Merino/Havertz on the pitch at all times for the aerial duels/Raya target.

Maybe Merino for Rice if he's available?

This is what I want Arteta to repeat in the post match presser. Just answer every question with this and nothing else.

Glad to hear you have a diagnosis Tim that is helpful! All the best for the next steps whatever they are - love your work it's always 10/10.

If this is his permanent level, what an unbelievable job by Hale End, but also would he be our best left back? I've not seen anything from Calafiori this good yet.
comment in response to

MLS belongs in midfield IMO, but you know what that means..... we're gonna need a left back!
comment in response to
post
Yeah that makes sense. Squad building is weird isn't it, you never complete it.
comment in response to

Do you mean from a "signing his mate" perspective? Or perhaps we paid slightly higher than was necessary to smooth the relationship with Real Sociedad?
comment in response to

If we sign anyone I will be extremely surprised.

Enormous concern about who gets injured next - injuries breed more injuries. If #5 twangs his hammy (or is otherwise indisposed with external matters) is it Josh Nichols time? If Rice goes down does MLS go into the 6? We are in huge trouble.
comment in response to

Jesus > Sterling on the right for me but I wouldn't mind seeing Sterling on the left at some point, feel he's more suited there.
comment in response to
post
The problem positions in terms of lack of rotation appear to be RB/RCB and the forward line at the moment. Getting Ben White back sooner rather than later would be good. Sterling being able to contribute on the right would also be extremely useful, and the Nwaneri injury is a huge shame.

I think the most likely reason is probably numbers - reckon the Kroenkes probably wanted to see some outgoings last summer and I don't think we did quite enough for their liking. Will be natural outgoings in the summer.
comment in response to

Suspect we have some money to spend but don't want to spend it. Would genuinely be very surprised if we see an incoming.

You always get one player who lobs accusations around for fun, but as soon as they get even a hint of an accusation, it's immediate and permanent headloss.
comment in response to
post
Yeah we need somebody but it's almost too late in some respects. I get we've still got chances for trophies but I don't really want another 7/10 and it's hard to see how we get much better in Jan.
We need our left sided Saka (I am aware these do not grow on trees) and a more creative 8 as you say.
comment in response to

No way do we sign Nico Williams in Jan unfortunately. I've got a really bad feeling we will do nothing, and keep our powder dry until summer.
