100 years ago today, 19 May 1925, Malcolm X was born. Through his many travels, he forged a radical vision of #PanAfricanism and internationalism, linking Black struggles in the US to anti-colonial movements across #Africa and the Global South. 📸 #MalcolmX in Nkrumah’s Ghana, 1964. #MalcolmX100

we must cherish small joys wherever we find them

Again, the UK government’s ideal international student is one that pays all of the immigration and tuition fees and then never actually moves to the country 🥴

About politics but could apply to other white-collar workplaces (ridiculous)

Sinners (2025)

At this point I'm willing to say almost anything that reduces commuting times is a positive for society

Just finished reading "Inside Your Brain" by the brilliant @lucyannunwin.bsky.social - that rare sort of children's book that manages to be informative and *fun* to read. A great introduction to the history of brain science for children.

Good thing there’s pressure from engineering departments to cut out humanities/writing courses from core curricula because students definitely won’t need to have multiple skill sets

The dark day you realize that you’re no longer an early career or young professional.

Rachel Reeves' own local Labour party unanimously votes to oppose her disability benefit cuts. 30-0 vote shows growing rebellion within Labour ranks as they plan to write directly to her. The pressure mounts from inside & outside. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university. University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.

Updated this piece about how the Trump admin removed images of women and persons of color from websites. The good news is that the webpage about a NASA employee overcoming adversity was restored after she posted about it. The bad news? NASA then fired her. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/whitewashi...

This! Also, COVID made me stop being annoyed when the writer has characters do horrendously stupid things in horror movies

NSF just cancelled ALL grants to Harvard researchers. That’s right - physics, astronomy, bio, CAREER - ALL. Professors won’t get paid. Postdocs won’t get paid. PhD students won’t get paid. This is insane! If they can do this to Harvard, they can do this to your school.

When your country definitely cares about women

This is obviously sinister but I find it beyond irritating that people react like this is unthinkable for the UK. Have we not been paying attention to recent sentencing about what makes you a woman? Do you think the UK is inherently special and different/better from any other place?

Super cool to live through a bunch of people playing into this because “work seminars are bullshit” or whatever.

These people think of themselves as the small clique of truly smart and courageous thinkers, when they're nothing but rubes susceptible to any scammer or charlatan who flatters their ego

A good example here of how helpful it can be for understanding, if someone occasionally stops and asks “Wait: is all this stuff everyone has been agreeing about and repeating for years actually true”

democrat who spent all of 2024 saying trump was a threat to democracy then voted to confirm 98% of his nominees: people don't trust us, we need to say someone is old

As Britain is starting to find out

Hey, if you want a break from doomscrolling, in December I started a YouTube channel for journaling and paper planning. I'd love to have 500 subs! It's been quiet as I've wrapped up the academic year, but I'm ramping up for a June relaunch. Thanks for considering! www.youtube.com/@stories_and...

I’m sorry but does this say TWO HUNDRED people run The Times’ opinions section? What an absolute waste of resources at a time when actual journalism is so underfunded and understaffed. bsky.app/profile/char...

At yesterday’s University of Michigan Regents meeting, I was promoted to full professor, effective July 1. 🎆 Full professor is the highest rank in US academia. 26% of faculty are full. Among those, 4% are Black; 2% BW. Started my PhD 20 years ago this fall. What a journey! A fantastic voyage.

We @praxisprojects.bsky.social have coordinated this letter signed by over 100 refugee, migrant and racial equality organisations asking to meet with Yvette Cooper. Episode 5 - sure, most cells have one nucleus, but what happens when they DON'T? @erinweisbart.bsky.social and I try to get to the bottom of what on earth you can do when your cells and nuclei just don't match up on the latest episode of "Ask Erin/Dear Beth"

In short, Starmer has taken a massive hit among Labour voters, for no gain elsewhere, while boosting Farage's popularity, including doubling his ceiling among Labour voters. I.e., the political scientists were right, Morgan McSweeney was horrendously wrong.

Politics, not just in Britain, really feels like it has come down to "who would you rather was giving you a good kicking", rather than "who will stop you from being kicked".

Remember there’s nothing virtuous in sharing an “un edited” image - the final vision only comes through after the “score” has been “performed” in the “lightroom” or the “darkroom” I could go on but hey…:::
