The US has been policing these ‘minor visa issues’ for years www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7275134 www.theglobeandmail.com/life/facts-a... (2011) #TrustedHousesitters #housesitting

Companies like #TrustedHousesitters continue to ignore comments by provided by US & UK governments. TrustedHousesitters says these arrangements are legal on a tourist visa. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024... Workaway is a bit more upfront about a work visa being needed if you're not a citizen.

To be fair, Workaway does have visa warnings for both its US and Canadian sites. Still a little ambiguous, yes, but much better than #TrustedHousesitters saying these kind of arrangements are allowed on a tourist visa.

It's not a grey area. America has been turning people away, for arrangements like this (mostly #TrustedHousesitters), for years: - www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... - shorturl.at/pgU4n And an American was refused entry to the UK for something similar. Back in 2019. www.housesitmatch.com/blog/interna...

Appreciate it. Moving forward, my goal is to get #TrustedHousesitters to update their visa advice so it doesn’t happen to others. I have been unsuccessful thus far because they refuse to admit it is work.

Foreigners have been refused entry to the USA for these kinds of arrangements dating back to 2013 ⬇️ web.archive.org/web/20131205...

Other travellers have been turned away at the border for organising similar arrangements through #TrustedHousesitters & other house sitting sites. These companies need to be upfront about the visa requirements and risks. - www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... - www.housesitmatch.com/blog/interna...

Policy. These arrangements require a work visa. Most people don't realise this until they end up being refused entry. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

It looks like TrustedHousesitters doesn't want to be associated with Becky's situation despite the company offering similar arrangements to Workaway. A TrustedHousesitters member tried to post about it on the company's community forum ⬇️ forum.trustedhousesitters.com/t/rebecca-bu...

An American immigration officer told a Canadian #TrustedHousesitterse member that he doesn't give a shit if TrustedHousesitters "feels" house sitting isn't work. Because it *is* work in the USA and UK (and Canada?).
comment in response to post
This is despite US and UK governments saying house and pet sitting is work, and not acceptable for travellers to engage in unless they have a work permit.

The Trading Standards officer I am liaising with is in talks with the Competitions and Markets Authority, and US, UK, Canadian and Australian immigration departments for definitions around work.

You shouldn't be encouraging travellers to lie to immigration officers. These kinds of arrangements require a work visa. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... www.bbc.com/news/article...

Brighton & Hove City Council's Trading Standards unit is investigating #TrustedHousesitters, and their immigration and visa advice.

At least Workaway has some kind of visa warning. #TrustedHousesitters, however, suggests members show immigration officers a letter saying house sitting is not work. These letters have resulted in several Canadians being refused entry to the USA. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

‪What’s interesting here is the BBC has previously promoted a similar service, #TrustedHousesitters, as a ‘unique way to travel the world’.‬ ‪https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20240328-pet-sitting-a-unique-way-to-travel-the-world-for-free‬

@chadbourn.bsky.social, while it may seem trivial, these kinds of arrangements are, unfortunately, viewed as work by US & UK govs & do require the traveller to have a work visa: - www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7275134 - www.housesitmatch.com/blog/interna... - forum.trustedhousesitters.com/t/challenges...

You'll need a work visa or risk being refused entry: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024... #TrustedHousesitters

@jenniferlcroft.bsky.social, entry refusal (minus the being detained for 10+ days part) for arrangements through #Workaway & #TrustedHouseitters have been happening around the world for years: - shorturl.at/Ak3mc - www.housesitmatch.com/blog/interna... - forum.trustedhousesitters.com/t/challenges...
