Nurses might administer some morphine under the tongue. Eventually he’ll go longer and longer between breaths until he stops breathing.
Please, please don’t be afraid to hold his hand or spend some time with him afterward.

Towards the very end, his color will start to change. You’ll notice this happening in the extremities first, feet and hands. His breathing will change. He may get a rattle in his throat - it sounds awful, but it is not hurting him in any way.

He might experience a short period where he feels good and has a lot of energy. He might get restless and seem out of it. He may eventually become unconscious and fall into a coma.

I am so, so sorry about your friend. Like someone else said, just be there. When he wants to talk, listen. He’ll probably be very tired and sleep much of the time. He may hallucinate - stay calm, and if he’s not agitated, let it be. 1/2

Speaking for myself - I love books. I can read far, far faster than someone can talk in a video. I can also highlight meaningful passages in a physical book, and read before bed without light from a screen keeping me awake. 😊
