This week's big news from my alma mater: www.science.org/content/arti...

Do it. Billet them in people's houses. I am an accelerationist specifically for this exact scenario.

My favourite Harrison Ford interview ‘I've been saving it just for you, man.’ www.hollywoodreporter.com/feature/harr...

I find it darkly hilarious that the replies to this are just a long string of "Yeah, but all those people SUCK!"

will never be able to hear Thomas Bryant’s name without thinking of the “calling for the ball while LeBron breaks the NBA scoring record” picture

Today's shuffle play reminder that the 90's were fucking weird: youtu.be/byDiILrNbM4?...

The Marlins have allowed 94 stolen bases this year.

it doesn't work on jellyfish stings either so at some point you have to conclude there was just a very successful fetishist with a public health column

Lately YouTube Music has been serving up a country song called "Somewhere Over Laredo," which is just A+ title work, congrats to everyone involved.

SINNERS has finally come to streaming, so we watched the most buzzed-about movie of the year last night, and my big takeaway is that I either need to start seeing these in the theater on opening day, or stop reading reviews and listening to podcasts.

What are people in literary studies up to nowadays? I have this vague intellectual history in my head wherein way back in the early 20th century it was all close reading aesthetically interesting texts, then in the mid-to-late-20th century they decided they were gonna save the world actually...

I learned today that the New York Yankees used to have a mascot. Readers, meet Dandy

Pick-up Hoops Weather Report: Played a game to 15 and then one to 7, and was about one more game to 7 away from losing peripheral vision. #TooDamnHot

When you’re in the 7 items or fewer queue & the cashiers are changing over & having a long chat.

Notice how Super Mario and all his supposed “enemies” are happy to get together and go go-kart racing? Wake up. It’s all kayfabe

My presentation at WelcomeFest, for those curious, focused exclusively on using WAR to expand the battleground and finding good candidates for it to help Dems win more seats. You can find the two core slides here. When good challengers emerge in these seats, I encourage you to donate!

This interesting piece from @mjrobbins.com is about crime and public perceptions of it, but this part of could also apply to scientists/science communicators and our audiences. martinrobbins.substack.com/p/stop-gasli...

I cannot stress enough, this is Trump making your kids tuition at *any* institution more expensive by scaring away international students who pay full-freight and thus subsidize US students' tuition. That's how Dems should attack: Trump wants college to be more expensive. Trump take college.

my favorite angle of Tom Thibodeau are the shots where it looks like him saying JOHN WEEEECK? THE BABA YAGAAAHHH??

I think it's a toss-up between acronyms and "Type [number]" classifications that contain no clues as to the reference. Any time someone writes "Type I error" instead of "False positive" they should receive a mild but startling electric shock from their keyboard.

Acronyms are the worst form of jargon, as their meaning can be completely different in different fields. (I just saw a post talking about FLT as in "Fermat Last Theorem" where my brain keeps reading it as "Faster than Light Travel", and this is one of the most benign cases.)

The best kind of networking you can do when you are a PhD student is to get to know other PhD students from other groups in your general field. Because they will be an invaluable source of info about your perspective post-doc supervisors. #AcademicChatter #AcademicCareer

Brushing up some old slides before a presentation.

It's weird how few kid sidekicks have tragic teen first moustaches.

fun crossword clue just now: "John to Ringo", 3 letters. answer was LOO

Lou Gehrig played in every single Yankees game from 1926 to 1938. 💪 Yet he didn’t lead (or co-lead) the American League in games played in 6 of those seasons. 😮 Tie games and rainouts gave others more. 😐 But Gehrig never missed a game. 🔥

Every time I try to obtain student data from our electronic systems I am appalled anew. This is terrible at a level it's hard to attribute to mere incompetence, except I can't see any comprehensible motive for deliberately making it this awful.

I've been stuck in an elevator twice in my life, oddly both in Charlottesville, VA. Once was in college when we overloaded it with rugby players, the other by myself after my cousin's wedding. On that occasion, the emergency phone didn't work, and it was past midnight so I had to climb out.

I had a Zoom call with the producers about this before it was shot, so it's especially nice to see the finished product. www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3i3...

this is the little league pledge and honestly that's a lot to demand out of a kid just wanting to get his 0-4 and two errors' worth of exercise for the day

23 years of quite possibly the smartest thing I've ever done:

That thing where I do a lazy Google Image search to look for a figure illustrating a physics process and get pointed to one from one of my own papers.

Forget all the annoying stuff in the world for a few seconds and enjoy the natural beauty of Brazil’s Seven-coloured Tanager (Tangara fastuosa) Photo: Luiz Cavalcanti Damasceno

I attended an Andor screening and panel discussion last night in LA. In this shot are, from left, an executive producer, Director Krennec, Bix, Mon Mothma, Cassian, Tony Gilroy, and Patton Oswalt. Oswalt's first question to the panel: Kirk or Picard?

“You cannot fact-check your way out of status competition.” Very good, by @danwphilosophy.bsky.social www.conspicuouscognition.com/p/status-cla...

Just a-priori we know there is some positive version of masculinity cos it's whatever is going on when this theme is playing. youtu.be/o6HM9QXnVdk

Hume also encountered a perennial type of guy in the humanities and also found them annoying.
