I don’t think a wandering ronin would ever undermine my band of thugs that keeps a local community under our rhumb. Just don’t think it would happen to me.

A female peregrine falcon parent feeding her young fledgling mid-flight (though it doesn’t end how you expect… 🧵 ⬇️) #birds #raptors

The baseball tournament was over before Union's graduation ended, so The Pip is not in uniform, but we did a third year of our now-traditional Father's Day photo:

Another incredibly awkward Father's Day at the Skywalker household. Still better than than the Christmas where Luke and Leia handed each other a canister of Folgers.

A slightly deep cut: COOL HAND LUKE

First time I’ve seen a picture of the silent majority

Took a redeye flight home from San Diego last night in part so I would be able to take The Pip to a travel baseball tournament today. In Game 1, he was shaken up after a collision at first, and pulled from the game. In Game 2, he took a four-seam fastball to the triceps, and you guessed it... #Owie

Bet Mel Gibson doesn’t make a movie about this

It was quite the wild weekend in the Fertile Crescent...

One criticism I do have of the way Americans teach English lit in school is that there’s too much emphasis on symbolism and not nearly enough close reading of the language itself. Most people don’t come out with the very basic vocabulary of literary devices or the ability to analyze structure.

I was interviewed for this piece on pr-historic physics, and it came out pretty well: www.history.com/articles/anc...

There's an avenue at Ashcourt Necropolis called The Path of Eternal Youth. How the heart breaks to walk it. A hundred stone children memorialising tragedy. Anguish avatars. Lithic batteries storing sorrow. It is one of the most haunting and haunted parts of that great city of the dead. – #CLNolan

It's been a busy week so took forever for me to read this piece about Aaron Judge and Yankees history, but it's really good: www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/...

I was around for that, but remember it a bit differently-- the old hands on r.a.s.w actually opposed the creation of the Jordan subgroup (initially) because it was too narrow. They eventually came around, but it took a while.

feel like robert heinlein would be a guy who was very pro musk in theory until they hung out together and then would immediately turn on him

You used to have to go outside to find them, even.

You’ve been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who is coming to save you?

I'm not really surprised; this is a tricky issue, and trips up even people who ought to know better. I know EXACTLY how hard it is to put technical topics in plain language, and I still have to make an effort to not be taken in by student talks just because they deploy a lot of vocabulary.

Do it. Billet them in people's houses. I am an accelerationist specifically for this exact scenario.

I find it darkly hilarious that the replies to this are just a long string of "Yeah, but all those people SUCK!"

will never be able to hear Thomas Bryant’s name without thinking of the “calling for the ball while LeBron breaks the NBA scoring record” picture

Today's shuffle play reminder that the 90's were fucking weird: youtu.be/byDiILrNbM4?...

The Marlins have allowed 94 stolen bases this year.

it doesn't work on jellyfish stings either so at some point you have to conclude there was just a very successful fetishist with a public health column

Lately YouTube Music has been serving up a country song called "Somewhere Over Laredo," which is just A+ title work, congrats to everyone involved.

SINNERS has finally come to streaming, so we watched the most buzzed-about movie of the year last night, and my big takeaway is that I either need to start seeing these in the theater on opening day, or stop reading reviews and listening to podcasts.

What are people in literary studies up to nowadays? I have this vague intellectual history in my head wherein way back in the early 20th century it was all close reading aesthetically interesting texts, then in the mid-to-late-20th century they decided they were gonna save the world actually...

I learned today that the New York Yankees used to have a mascot. Readers, meet Dandy

Pick-up Hoops Weather Report: Played a game to 15 and then one to 7, and was about one more game to 7 away from losing peripheral vision. #TooDamnHot

When you’re in the 7 items or fewer queue & the cashiers are changing over & having a long chat.

Notice how Super Mario and all his supposed “enemies” are happy to get together and go go-kart racing? Wake up. It’s all kayfabe

My presentation at WelcomeFest, for those curious, focused exclusively on using WAR to expand the battleground and finding good candidates for it to help Dems win more seats. You can find the two core slides here. When good challengers emerge in these seats, I encourage you to donate!

This interesting piece from @mjrobbins.com is about crime and public perceptions of it, but this part of could also apply to scientists/science communicators and our audiences. martinrobbins.substack.com/p/stop-gasli...
