You know you can reach these folks, the 'random racist in Ohio' because we've done it before. Over and over again before. Declaring that positive social change is impossible because we don't want to do the hard, unsatisfying work of making it happen is a form of giving up on the future.

Maybe I'm a dullard who can't recognize Deep when I see it, or maybe the folks writing and podcasting about movies are straining to find significance that isn't there because that's the job in 2025. Either way, I should probably try to avoid the #discourse around movies until I've seen them myself.

This keeps happening to me with buzzy movies, where I hear a lot about how Significant something is, and then it turns out to be "just" a fun and well-made genre piece. Which ought to be more than enough in a world of comic-book slop, but the expectation of profundity ends up cutting against it.

Having read and heard a lot of people talking about how it had Profound Things to Say About the American Experience, though, created a level of expectation for it to be something much deeper than it was ever going to be. Which weirdly undermined the movie.

It's a good, fun movie that takes its time getting around to the vampires but that's okay because it's got good music and character stuff. Which means it's pretty much what I expected when I saw the first teasers for it.
